Anyone know when that satellite is going to....

engadget said:
According to CNN sources, the US Navy plans to shoot down that failed satellite at 2230 ET from a ship west of Hawaii. The idea is to get a shot off as early as possible in case a second or third attempt is required. The $10 million missile fired from the USS Lake Erie will not carry a warhead. Instead, the 22,000mph impact on the school-bus sized satellite combined with the exploding hydrazine fuel tank should blast the satellite into bite-sized chunks expected to burn up in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the timing of the launch -- 5:30pm locally -- means that our naked eyes won't likely be treated to much of a show. That's what observatories are for.

Rough seas are causing a delay..wtf. Just as well theyre not at war, all this high tech crap and for whatever reason some rough seas stop a missile from being fired into space.

To be honest I'm sure they could do it , but they will surely try to lessen any un necessary risk, i'm sure if it was there last chance they would go tonight

does that mean then we have the tech to shoot alien invaders out of the atmosphere now?! (or other bits and bobs? space junk and the like?)

I think they did it already, they hit it, but don't yet know if it was successful.

I don't get why they have to shoot it down from a naval vessel rather than land-based weapon - just to show off?

If you ask me, this whole thing is nothing more than a PR exercise by good old uncle sam. I find it quite troubling how under the radar the implications of this exercise are and how little people are talking about it. Essentially it demonstrates the americans are able to, at will, shoot down any satellite they so desire to destroy. Watch out enemies of the 'land of the free'.

And in a totally unrelated incident, Iran recently deployed its first satellite into orbit about the earth. Coincydink?

They were probably afraid that some of their competitors would find something in the wreckage if it did manage landfall hence having to blow it up.

Why the stupid tory though?

They should have just said there was a high probablility of it hitting a populated area and hence had to be obliterated in as cool a way as imaginable while showing off their pinpoint accurate weapons systems.

Wonder if the footage of the impact will be on YouTube...? Assuming they can hit the damn thing, of course.

If it made it onto that site, Youtube would have a field day :D

And as for hitting it, I know a lot of people mock America's military/general intelligence, but when it comes to things like this, they seem to be quite good at it ;)

The technology has been around for years, Russians were doing this back in the 80s.

This is just bringing to the public attention, like when they revealed some of the stealth planes.

I don't know what the big fuss is about.

Did anyone cry hard when Japan tested an SM-3 in december last year, surface>space?

The US has successfully struck a disabled spy satellite with a missile fired from a warship in waters west of Hawaii, military officials say.

Beeb.

First time in a while that they've actually hit the thing they were aiming for...

That's pretty cool.

Funny how what was a bit of an embarassment has been turned into a display of power...

Just when China thought they ruled the roost of destroying satellites :p
