How long did it take, average speed,

London near J24 of M25 to Central Edinburgh

and whats the best route.

your speed is appreciated.

6 hours?

Google maps reckons 7:15. With the M1 widening roadworks going on I'd be surprised if it was less than 8 hours, dependant on the time setting off.
 
If you're lucky with the traffic and you take a few stops I'd say 8hrs, but probably around 7 if you're lucky. I've done it in 6 on the bike from SE London.

Straight up the M1 I would have thought, then the A1M?
 
Done this trip last week ,

Depends on time you leave etc , M6 is best bet and make sure you use the toll road as it will save time , From Brighton it took me 8 hours 15 minutes sticking to 70-75 all the way . The main problem is the time you hit the A71 as the road works are still going on

I'd probably go M1, M60, M6, A74 (M)
 
To get to Edinburgh you are far better off travelling up the west coast (M6 / M74) than you are going up the East Coast.

Coventry to Edinburgh used to take me 5 hours by travelling up the West Coast.
