I took a look at a Samsung today and was at the brink of purchasing the 50" SAMSUNG PS50P96FD but I figured I should do a little reading before spending all this money.

Anyway I looked about for prices and reviews and noticed 2 models keep coming up with the same specs. Could someone explain the difference to me please?

I have found

50" SAMSUNG PS50P96FD
50'' SAMSUNG PS50P96FHDX
50" SAMSUNG PS50P96FDX - on OcUK only.

Both have the same specs are far as I can tell it is the same unit, but why different models :(

Good idea, thanks. Will post back my results when I have 5mins free in work

EDIT: OK having looked at this on the Samsung website you provided I have concluded the following

50" SAMSUNG PS50P96FD - This number matches exactly on the website
50'' SAMSUNG PS50P96FHDX - This is unknown, model is not on the site but has the same specs as the other model here = I'm very confused.
50" SAMSUNG PS50P96FDX - on OcUK only. - This is the same as the top model, just has added an X for no apparent reason.

I am now offically at a loss.

Why do the same spec models have to have different numbers.. I'm so annoyed with this.

...and breath

Not sure if this is the case here but Samsung sell a few "exclusive" models through high street retailers that have unique model numbers, typically they will have an identical specification to the non-exclusive version but there may be some slight cosmetic differences.

Might be worth just sending an email to Samsung with the model numbers and asking them to explain it :)

I might be being cynical, but I'm sure some of the shops get these "exclusive" versions to avoid having to price match.

Thats an interesting theory.. got me thinking.

Would be horrible if that is true. Back on topic I have sent Samsung an email and will post the reply here as soon as I get it.

X denotes a model for on-line resell only. basically identical, but enables samsung to track who'se buying stock at on-line reseller prices then selling it on for hightstreet price

FHDX is almost certainly some websites typo of FDX.

its only DSG retail that get up to that

DSG is the currys / dixons group. And they have exclusive versions of the R87 (they sell the R88) and the M86 (they sell the M87)

when its an "exclusive" that means you cant price match, its generally a number change.

Rather than just a letter change, which as i noted above, the X means its for on-line sale only, and is stop highstreet retailers pulling a fast one. Because you cant seel the X versions in the highstreet.

Are the "X" added onto the model numbers also printed on the back of the Televisions? or is it just a store reference/online thing only?

FHDX is on a number of websites. I believe you are right though in what you say. I just want to be sure before I spend £1500.

4/5 Websites listed it as FHDX including a well known Greek online store.

FWIW Dixons are online only. There should be no high street stores for this company (Having spoke to a Currys salesman last night). I am aware it came from a Salesman though ;)

X is part of the model number. So if the model numbers on the back, the X will be there

im guessing the FHDX is probably the european model if its on a greek website. Its quite common for dodgy retailers to sell on parallel import products and supply a UK adaptor as most expensive european electronics are multi votage and adapat to whatever voltage they are plugged into.

I know a certain french website thats big over here that does just that ;)

Had a response from Samsung. Not a very good one at that.

"Dear Chris

Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics.

Your ref: **********

In regards to your query, there is no model PS-50P96FHD only PS-50P96FD.
This is likely just a misprint at the retailers end. It is possible that
there has been confusion withour other plasma models which end HD."

Was shopping for a LE40N87BD over the weekend and had exactly this in the same well known retail store. Granted I was only taking the other half to look before ordering on-line but on the off chance I could get the same deal and take it away same day I asked if they would price match, turns out they would on the part of the range in the 'standard' guise and the rest were all 'exclusive' and as such they wouldn't. The only difference seemed to be the round power button was gone and instead they have a light blue strip at the bottom. Annoyingly the other half liked the one with the stripe... like you buy a 40" 1080 set to look at the power indicator

exactly as i suspected

its either a wholesaler's misprint (and thus everybody is selling it wrong) or its the foreign version that samsung UK dont know about.

you're quite correct. Only difference between the m86 and m87 (DSG retail exclusive) is that the m86 has a chrome bottom edge, the m87 has a blue led strip inside the telly that glows when its on

for what its worth, if she likes the blue effect. Look at the samsung F86. Its sold as the F86 everywhere. there are no exclusives for it. As such my mate got the place who live electricals to price match an internet one

its one of the best Samsung Sets about :)
