It's still going (X800 XT 256MB) barely ;)

Hi all

I'm running a fairly old setup by todays standards, the above topic card with an X64 3500+ running 2gig DDR on an Asus A8V Deluxe.

Currently i'm a bit of an MMO addict, WoW mainly (plz resist the flaming :p ) which runs fine on my current setup.

However with newer gen games like AOC and WaR coming out, they are going to need some fairly decent system setup.

Considering how AGP is a dead interface, I believe the best available for it is the 1950 Pro? I'm just wondering what kinds of differences I'm likely to see in general if i just replaced my x800 for this? Double the difference? If so job well done, and it might do for something like AoC? Or you think the difference would be negligable in which case I'd have to push towards a PCI-E mobo.

Which if I kept my current socket 939 a64 chip, memory would only be ddr, are all those going to HUGELY bottleneck any sort of decent performance out of the higher end pci-e cards? I'm guessing so...

Just wondered if anyone could offer a little advice! Much thanks in advance for anyone doing so.

On my old AGP rig I went from an overclocked X800XT-PE (256meg) to a X1950Pro (512Meg) and in all games it was much much smoother, definitely noticeable
I could play FEAR at 1280x1024 with 2AA/8AF, BF2 and COD2 and HL2 at 1600x1200 4AA/8AF no problems

But by todays standards those games are pretty much old hat, what about for stuff like dare i say Crysis, or with the newer MMO (most im interested in) such as LOTRO or the newer AOC, dont suppose any of you guys have any experience or know much about how this bad boy will handle?

Thanks a lot for the replies so far by the way!

I hear what your saying, sorry cant help with MMO etc
Suppose you could also say that by Crysis's standards all current GPU's are old hat too ;)

newer games may require even more than a 1950pro to achieve a decent framerate, i personally went from a x800xl to a 1950pro and did not see a HUGE performance increase, instead when i got a new setup with PCI>e(8800gts) and core2duo did i only see a difference.

If i was you, save a little more and buy a new system, due to your processor and DDR memory you will bottleneck the 1950 best save and get a nice new rig for around 400pounds that can handle future games such as AOC etc Crysis on high.

Yeah I think thats what I'll likely end up doing. Just seems a bit silly to buy a card which is on an interface which is that old already.

Just a bit depressing really, having to get rid of the mobo/cpu mem and gfx all in one hit is a bit depressing. Mind you, god knows how long I've had the current setup :)

I still have my old rig, same as yours but with an x2 4200. It can play Crysis not too bad which surprised me as i took out the 1950 I had to pop it in with the e6600 i got.

The 1950 is a much better card, but it may be worth your while to sell up and see what else you can get.

No flame here, I share your addiction.

I went from an X800XL to a 7900GS (slightly worse than the 1950 Pro, I believe). WoW runs 1680x1050, max details, no AA, at ~50 fps. Never gets below 25, even in the busiest 25-man raid instances.

Maybe that's good to know? :)

You should wait and build a new system from scratch. Buying a new and good card on AGP is not a good idea as you will not be able to use it anywhere else but on that AGP system. Plus AGP cards tend to be more expensive and rare.

Get PCI-e 2.0 and a Geforce 8800GT or ATi HD3870XT (depending on budget)

Yeah sounds like a good idea, sure id love an 8800GT, but then i gotta dish out pennies for all the other upgrades at the same time.

Eddie, atm i think i run wow in prolly 1280 with most things on full and in the really busy places, Shattrath for example and Ogri in peak times I notice my fps drops to around 20-25fps, not really a problem in places like this but noticable, I'd like silky smooth in such things. Trouble is wow (generally) is very low requirements, something like LOTRO or AOC will prolly cain the hell out of my system spitting it out saying "yeah whatever mate!"
