just saw this on another forum and i thought some xp users here would be interested.

Download the script and run it on a machine currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The script sets a registry key on your system. The registry key is required for Windows Update to recognize your machine as a valid target for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2.

Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key. Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta.

It is recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package.

read the bit in bold and don't blame me if it ***** your system up. :D

and remember, this will overwrite patched files such as uxtheme.dll so don't moan about your themes not working.

Giving it a try now :)

Any noticeable slow downs with it? I heard that earlier versions were rather buggy and slowed down the computer a bit.

copying files seems abit faster... but to be honest theres not much different. not like the vista sp1 that improves vista, which im running too.

what microsoft really need to put in sp3 is a ton of sata & raid controller drivers

that would be so helpfull, instead of relying on 3rd party tools (or a ton of hassle) to fill the void

My hard drive has been thrashing a lot since the install and a re-boot but going to give it a good clear up and a defrag........ system seems to be running the same as before, in terms of speed.

Just installed it on a laptop I'm taking to a network security course on Tuesday.

Seems to be okay, only problem I had was that it was a fresh install and Microsoft have missed out the HD Audio Driver again so I had to use a modified .inf for audio to work under SP3. :)

I slipstreamed this into an XP Pro ISO, will I have to do anything when the official realease comes out?

yeah, make a completely new iso

slipstreaming rc's is just a royal waste of time, why do people bother
