Hi all, im currently using the motorola 'cable' modem for the internet. I'm looking to move my computer upstairs but don't wanna use cables so i'm looking to replace this for a new cable modem with wireless capabilities.

Any ideas?

You can't get a 'wireless cable modem', what you have to do is get a wireless router and connect that to your current cable modem.

I personally use a Linksys WRT54GS (with DD-WRT firmware), and have been very happy with it :)

It's worth noting that the currently on-sale WRT54GS will only run a limited version of DD-WRT, whereas the WRT54GL will run a more complete version.

Ahh yes, should have added that, I'm using the cut-down DD-WRT. Still very usefull though

ok i've got a Azurewave AW-NR580 wireless router here. I've passed the internet cable from the 'cable' modem to the 'internet' port on the wireless router. My computer thats upstairs can see the wireless router and connect to it via 198.168.0.1 but won't connect to the internet.

What settings do i need to enter in the Azurewave router to use the cable modem? The cabling is all fine but i think the thing that remains to do is setup the router to work with the cable modem but thats where i'm not experienced? Can anyone help me with the settings i need to change in router settings to get this working?

If you haven't already, you need to switch the modem off, disconnect the router, switch the router back on, wait for the lights to settle, then connect the router.

Yeah i done that. The power was off on everything. i cabled everything up and switched both the modem and router on, everything settled but i just can't connect to the net

I think i need to know how to sort the router settings to see and use the cable modem to connect through. Do i have to put in a user name & password in the wireless router to connect to the net? I'm sure its just down to the settings on the wireless router not being set up yet

You don't need a username or password, or anything else - the router should get an IP from the modem and off you go.

still no joy with power What kind of connection would it be PPPoA or PPPoE? i'm thinking the latter. Its definately the setting in the router that i need to setup mefinks. Or should it work if i put the units back to default settings?

Try setting it all to default, power them both off, then power the router up, let the lights settle, then finally power the cable modem up. If it doesn't work straight away, power cycle the modem a few times.
