yes, or you can format everything and just start your install with the MD cd.

Thanks mate maybe a fresh install will be better just in case?
I was just worried with taking vista off and putting xp it might get mixed up somewhere along the lines and not work.

Nothing like formatting your computer at work on double time :D

lol cant think of a better time to spend a few hrs looking at an install bar moving slowly along.

I ended up dual boot XP & Vista, though took off MD cos I didnt like it, and keeping Vista left me with Vista Media Center which i find better.

Yeah i'm thinking to myself am i going to use media direct really? And it's not much hardship to boot up and play a dvd really.

Might just do a fresh install starting with media direct if i go that way and following the instructions elsewhere but just using the Xp disc instead of the Vista one i have all my drivers ready ( i hope )

Just wiped my M1530 and installed win xp on it every seems to have gone fine but i have a yellow question mark besides SM BUS Controller?

I installed what i thought was the driver IEEE Bus R166188.

Can anyone help me out please.

Thanks

EDIT: duh of course, you won't be able to download these files with a fresh Window XP installation as you won't have access to the internet yet! So I recommend you download the files needed from Steps 3 to 13 onto an external hard drive or USB pen drive before you format

Just finished doing a 2nd fresh format of mine and reinstalling Windows XP. Here's a list of the files that I used, and the order I installed them in:

1. made a new Windows XP+SP2 disc with the Intel Matrix Storage SATA driver on it, using nLite. Instructions and file found here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=212981&highlight=169.01

2. installed Windows XP and once it booted with it, it had these with yellow exclamation marks under Device Manager:
- Base System Device x3 - this is for the SD/MMC/MS Pro memory device
- Biometric Coprocessor - fingerprint scanner device
- Ethernet Controller - ethernet device
- Network Controller - wireless device
- PCI device - onboard sound
- SM Bus Controller - Intel mobile chipset
- Video Controller (VGA compatible) - nVidia 8600M GT graphics

3. installed the Intel Mobile Chipset drivers using the R153997.exe file, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R153997.EXE Removes 'SM Bus Controller' from Device Manager

4. installed the nVidia 169.09 drivers, from here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16154 Make sure to download the Modded INF file as well and replace the default one in the folder before installation, as these drivers have been tweaked for extra mobile performance. Removes 'Video Controller (VGA Compatible)' from Device Manager

5. installed the Ricoh Memory Card drivers, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R141246.EXE Then install in any memory card, and the Found New Hardware Wizard appears, just install automatically. Removes 'Base System Device x3' from Device Manager

6. installed the Marvell Ethernet Controller drivers, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R167854.EXE It says for Windows Vista but it works fine in Windows XP too. Removes 'Ethernet Controller' from Device Manager

7. installed the Creative Labs webcam drivers and software, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/r173082.exe

8. installed the touchpad drivers and software, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/R166314.EXE There is another set of touchpad drivers from Dell, made by Synaptic, which I tried at first but it didn't give me scrolling options

9. installed the SigmaTel audio drivers, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R171789.exe This is the part that I had the most problems with and required a lot of trial and error. It seems there are quite a few R171789 files out there, and they would give error messages like 'ExitError' during installation, or the Found New Hardware Wizard would fail to automatically install the driver upon reboot. The only way so far I've found to make sure the file is correct is to check the version.txt file: if it says version A11, and OEM ver 5.10.0.5515 or something like that, then you have the right one.
Install first using the setup.exe file, and then restart your PC after a minute since it will seem nothing is happening. Upon restart, installation will continue and it will say Found New Hardware with first 'Microsoft UHA Bus Driver for HD Audio' and then 'SigmaTel HD Audio CODEC". Just let Windows automatically locate and install the driver and it should be fine. Removes 'PCI device' from Device Manager too

10. installed the wireless drivers and Intel PRO Wireless software, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/Intel_multi-device_A13_R171131.exe Removes 'Network Controller' from Device Manager

Update 28/08: I just switched back from Vista to XP and I've finally found out how to fix an annoying issue I also previously had; where upon waking up from Sleep mode, the Intel 3945ABG Wireless card is disabled and you require a full restart to get it connecting again. I fixed this by going to its Properties under Device Manager, click the Advanced tab, find Power Management and set the slider for Maximum Performance.

11. installed the fingerprint device, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/Security/R156915.EXE Removes 'Biometric Coprocessor' from Device Manager

12. installed the Dell Quickset software, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R165094.EXE

Update 10/05: (*NOTE* Not too sure about this now as I didn't list 'BCM 2045' in Device Manager previously )13. installed the Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth module driver and software, from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R161378.EXE Removes 'BCM 2045' from Device Manager

Well, there you go. I believe everything should be fine now according to Device Manager. You don't have to install the drivers in this order. If any other errors arise, then I'm afraid I can't help you since this method has worked perfectly fine for me so far. And I cannot format and test it again since I would have to go through activating Windows again which is a hassle due to Microsoft's authentication policy thing. Good luck!

And yes that this is for the SD/MMC/MS Pro memory device
has now gone with that drive though i'm having a strange problem.

I am having a problem with my new M1530 with the Intel 4965 wireless card connecting to the internet through my 802.11g router . It can see the network and says its connected locally and to the internet but when I open IE it doesn't connect. Then it connects but then seems lose the connection and reconnects and lets me surf again then i lose it again?

If i have it set to G mode only or Auto it seems i only get 5.5mb it just seems to keep losing connection? Speeds goes from 54mbps down to 5.5 or even 2?

I assume you are integrating those drivers so that you can install XP with the ACPI (or whatever its called) enabled rather than switching to ATA in the bios.

Do you get a performance boost from this over setting it to ATA in bios? Cause I don't really know what the difference is?

I haven't really tested it to be honest. You could probably just change the settings in BIOS and skip making the disc. I plan to switch completely back to Vista in a few months once I've finished my project however, so I figured it would be best if I left the BIOS settings exactly as they were when I first got the laptop.

I wouldn't know about that to be honest. Are you using Windows or the Intel PRO Wireless software to manage your wireless connection? And a bit of a dumb question this, but maybe you have MAC Address Filtering enabled and simply forgot to add the MAC address of your Wifi card to the list? Other than that, I'm afraid I can't help you, as I have no idea whether it's the card's fault, or your router.

I am actually in love with the laptop i got, just wish i had gone a larger resolution one, got the 1280*800 version.

I never realised laptops could be so nice like this without paying thousands. Love the media keys, the remote they give you and the free creative ep-630's which i have just found (they sound amazing :))

Guys
Found the Dell outlet site but cannot find how to search for the XPS , only Inspirion and Latitude range , whats the secret lol
Any body help ?
Cheers

Do people usually use the Dell Quickset software - whats its main use/advantage?

I don't believe they are necessary but they are related to some of the hotkeys that you can have configured on your keyboard, and provide some adjustable options for your wifi on/off switch and wifi locator on the right side.

Any reason why you have linked to 169.09 and not the latest?

Well, they are the ones I'm using at the moment but are by no means what I say everyone should use. I believe however they are the latest ones that have been configured by LaptopVideo2Go according to here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/xp

Btw, is everyone's eject touch sensitive button working perfectly fine? Mine was, until yesterday where the blue light doesn't glow and nothing happens when I press it. The other buttons, such as the media and sound work fine however. I hope it's just a software bug or something, and won't require me to send my laptop back, as I'm quite used to ejecting by right-clicking my drive now.

Ah cool, got it now. I was worried about pressing too hard incase I broke the thing :) Kinda continues to flash for about 3-4 seconds though after I have ejected the disc, which I did not notice before. Hmm...
