Just played a game as TEC against the Vasari. Built up what I thought was a large fleet but he had almost 400 ships!! Thought he was cheating at first but then watched the replay and saw he was using the dark fleet for free ships. He only had 6 planets the whole game!!

How do people take on the Vasari or is it just a case that if you dont rush them to start with meaning a short game you're just going to lose as they then have 100s of free ships :(

The Dark Armada Ability only gives smaller ships no cap ships no support cruisers etc, so the main fleet is basically just a blob. Use cap ships and support ships to break this blob. Also use some flak frigates so any bombers will be destroyed.

Also Dark Armada comes at a great cost as it really does eat into your fleet capacity, sure you can make a massive fleet very quick but it will be mostly frigates with some cruisers which are easily destroyed.

You'd think they would be easily destroyed, but I was beaten about 30 mins into the game (as I was messing about!) so was observing for a while. It was an 8 player map and the 2 star systems hadnt attacked each other yet so all sides were building up their fleets. No other player had anything at all remotely near the number of ships.

This guy then proceeded to wipe out his 3 allies which had had the same amount of time to build a fleet but didnt get free frigates and also the pirate base! Continually bringing in free ships as the others died. The other players capitals and cruisers just couldnt stop the sheer numbers so they lost.

Well, the easy answer is that you need to build up your economy faster.

In terms of getting out a large fleet quickly, the vasari are the weakest of the 3 races. Their strength comes in mobility from their phase stabilisers, allowing them to traverse the map quickly and so make do with a smaller number of fleets. Their ships are good, but they take up a lot of supply points.

The dark armada takes a lot of resources invested into research and structures to achieve, and only gives around 300 supply points of extra ships. If you were to plough this same effort into refinaries, trade ports and civilian upgrades for your planets you would advance your economy enough to more than match the armada.

TEC strength is in their economy, and good well-armoured ships. Expand fast, lay down trade and refinaries as soon as you can, and build a lot of LRM frigates. Only go for more fleet logistics upgrades when you need the extra ships, as the upkeep tax will kill your economy.
