free gift

I installed the Laptop & Wifi my mate got off AOL a few weeks back. His teenage son is well happy with it.

£29.99 x 24 months = £719.76

Or in other words thats £359.88 (which is roughly what a PS3 costs)

Then another £359.88 for the broadband (at £14.99 a month) LOL.

Thanks but no thanks if i want a PS3 id go buy one and sign up to some ISP for 15 quid a month with a clear defined limit and monthly contract and be free to leave as i wish.

It's not really a free gift though is it? It's quite obviously factored into the cost.

Well it depends if you were going to buy it in the first place - if you were going to sign up to AOL anyway and they gave you a PS3 to do it, you have already made your mind up to join AOL and now you have free things!

how long before you get the free gift ?

I don't know, I can phone them a bit later & ask if you like. As others have said it's hardly a Free gift. More like an arrangement with your ISP to get you online ASAP, Like a job lot. I know they had to sign up for 18 months for starters. They are happy though as my friends the parents have there two kids upstairs with lappys, one bought one free, a wireless at the bottom of the stairs & wifey on her system in the front room. It was a new house so an All in deal suited them, Major factor here is None of them are gamers.
The connection or the Modem is no where near good enough for gaming, maybe if you hard wired ? Don't know as it's not what they wanted but needs baring in mind. The laptop itself is Bobby basic but adequate for general internet usage. For them it was they needed hooking up the wife shopped around for a deal & thought **** it i may as well get a laptop chucked in for the lad as she has to sign up with one anyway.
In the back of my mind Always though is that once somebody hooks up there needs grow quickly, The Interweb rather than being a pleasure on a crap ISP/System becomes a chore. They get fed up & rather than enjoy the pleasures of the interweb just ignore it & only do what they have to. As there knowledge grows through usage & they realise there are better deals out there they are hindered because of the 18 months contract & tie ins so cannot move to a better set up.
Personally i would speak to people real local to your house & find out the best performing ISP & go for that one rather than let Fake gifts draw you in.
Ask gamers & pirates for the lowest ping, quickest download, fairly priced ISP in your manor. Only listen to those within a 5 mile radius of your home though.

Erm.. No. If you're on ADSL Max currently, you pretty much know what speed to expect, if you're on normal ADSL, you can get an idea of what speed to get here.

A 5 mile radius is also really rather too big to get an idea of what people get from their ISP as you will more than likely get people at the start and end of the exchange loop.

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings.php - Notice the top 18 have no ads on TV? And the 11 I can see in their with ads are all in the bottom half of the chart? Now factor in that the ones you see on TV will have the most customers, thus, the people in the 5 mile radius will more often than not be on one of those ISP's.

Answer me this, would you prefer one of the top 10 ISP's, with UK only support, no Indian call centres here, or one of the bottom, with poor customer service? Yea, I thought so.

Back on the subject of 'free' gifts, sure, that's fine, and if they're happy with the product, AOL, in this case provide for their needs, even better, but how many people, with their 'bribe' in tow will now go and recommended that ISP to a friend?
