Living with a LCR (the first few weeks)

inefficient when they have a fault or two and go into safe mode.. or did you think all of the millions of 20vt engines out there drank petrol for fun and everyone still kept buying them?

Not to humour your sarcasm, it was a valid question.

Some of the 1.8T engined cars people post here often post low MPG too, yet, take a large engine BM engine which produces more power and hauls more weight, they seem to fare much better. Are the 1.8T's just thirsty?

Perhaps you have no experience of this Matt and thought you'd post a cheap quip instead!

I agree, I think it makes it a good engine. Decent enough performance, especially when remapped and good MPG if needed. A good balance.

Given that they use it in loads of different applications and states of tune its to be expected that some have higher and lower fuel consumptions depending on its use. Its not just found in one form.

I would imagine the engine is perfectly suited to the Leon/A3/Golf etc but when it comes to hauling A4/Passat etc it's probably not ideal and there are better choices, V6 perhaps.

I remember a while ago my mate agonising over an A4 and whether to get the 2.4 V6 or the 1.8T. He went V6 in the end.

i'd rather a car that has been ragged a bit, at least u know it will take it then

When I tell people about the test drive my cars previous owner took me on (he basically drove the balls off it :D ) The general reaction is "and you still bought it? "

For me I was more impressed with the fact that we drove around for quarter of an hour talking cars in general whilst it warmed up then after the fun he took a longer route back through the village he lived in and idled the car for a coupe of minutes, both to let the turbo cool. He was quite honest about the fact that the car got "used" :D

Lots of other silly little things meant I was happy it was the right one

typically theyll average 30-34mpg with combined/mixed driving, a friend of mine has an a3 20vt that is remapped (so in the region of 190bhp) and she drives it hard on a regular basis. she has somehow managed to get the average to just over 36mpg over the last 2000 miles

so yeah, when running right, and especially in the right hands, theyll be really economical. get one with a few duff sensors and they will pour petrol away. a guy that comes to our meets had issues on his 20vt and it was returning 16mpg haha

was at the scottish vag meet today a quick 100 mile round trip blast to kirkcaldy and back, involving a bit of play time with a few things (focus St, cooper S and a couple of boyracered things)

managed 31 MPG quite chuffed with that as it by no means driven slowly or with a light right foot.

seems to be quite happy sitting at 30+mpg around 85/90 mph

she seems to have settled in and is trying to blend in with the octavias :)

seen here in a rather unwashed and unloved state at todays scottish vag meet

i was driving a 20vt mk4 late last year for a while, i found that on the motorway, between 65-70mph, mpg was really good, once you went above there it went down quite steeply (to about 31) which aint bad but in my head, for those extra 5mpg id rather not lose the mpg.

they are a good engine for everyday use, im just not keen on the power delivery though

Sounds like you rushed into this and didn't do enough homework first. Which is backed up by the fact you asked about a Type R and bought a Cupra R.

Please tell me you didnt buy the first you viewed?

Exactly my thoughts.....

Also funny (IMO) that the comparison turned out to be a CTR and a modded LCR.....with issues.

i'd hardly call them issues,

the timing belt is being taken care of this week and the dealer is still adamant its not due yet :) the fuel economy thing is right foot related,

just waiting on it blowing up now so you can all go ZOMG11111one111oneone111

you fail at buying cars :)

hehe my little 1.8 *slighty* tuned 5 didn't return much in terms of mpg - then again the pedal was comfortable in the divett it had made for itself on the floor of the car ;)

going on track days is part of the fun of owning a fast fun car - it's concerning that an engine would blow up just for doing a track day. It's the whole point of the car being invented!!! Getting A to B is just a handy second ;)

am i right in thinking that you would have been driving round with invalid insurance for the last few weeks then?

If you weren't aware of the mods, your insurance company couldn't have been.....could have been an interesting claim if anything should have happend?
