How long would you expect an air filter to last?

Really boring thread i know, but i was having a fiddle with the air filter setup on my car to see how it comes apart, had a quick check of the filters and both of them are literally black with dirt and crap.

They were only changed about 3 months/6-7000 miles ago, is this normal?

They are only £14 each from GSF but oh my god? The recommended mercedes interval is 10k miles, but these look buggered. Could be contributing to my bad fuel economy of late?

Pointless thread i know and i cant see what i could possibly do about how long they (havnt) lasted, but ive never known filters to be knackered after such a small number of miles before :/

Infact yeah, come to think of it i dont even think the air filters are changed at every 10k service.

Oh well, probably the dirty clogged up M4 into london i sit on for hours every day, the car rarely gets a chance to stretch its legs :(

Thought about maybe an aftermarket Panel filter, such as K&N or Pipercross?

Means you can clean them as/when needed :)

Air filters are the one thing I look at the in the service schedule then replace twice as often as they recommend. For what they cost and how easy they are to change it seems silly not to.

At £28 every few months its annoying additional expense mind :) Plus it takes around 15-20mins to change them with a torx bit and means you get grubby.

Like you said its probably the smog from you sitting in traffic everyday with captain "in gear acceleration!!!11111" infront of you sitting looking at his MPG trip reading just as bad as everyone elses, trying to ignore the sound of a combine harvester under the bonnet.

K&N + filter cleaner = win for you I recon

You could sit in traffic forever and not drive a mile, the air filter will still get dirty.

Driving conditions are far more important to filter 'life' than miles driven

In dusty weather, filters get black fast. Last summer when there was a big crop fire around here, that I ended up parking near to, then driving through the fumes of in heavy traffic, my new air filter, and cabin filter were ruined in a month!

I have a pipercross foam, so in the sink, good scrub, leave to dry and the a quick spray of glue and it is sorted!

changed my airfilter after 7k it looked brand new :(

as it loked brand new didn't change fuel or cabin filter so it saved me a few quid :p
