256bit mem bus...That looks like a down grade to me

It's worth it for the reduction in noise, heat and power usage.

Having run crossfired 2900XT's i wouldn't want to go back. :(

A decent alternative is the 3850pro. When overclocked they provide similar performance. Ultimately they're identical to 3870's apart from lower clocked cores (lower core voltage being the primary reason) and DDR3 vs DDR4.

Is a 3850Pro at the same core speed as a 3870XT about equal?

If you could get it up there then i'd have no doubt it would be equal.

Mine only managed 770mhz (up from 670mhz stock) but the pencil mods to push them further are quite simple. Gurusan heavily clocked his 3850 to beyond 3870 speeds so he probably has a good idea of the performance available @ 3870 speeds.

My impression of my 3850pro @ 770 was that it's performance was very comparable to my previous 2900xt @ stock.

The 3870 consumes around 105 watts at load, the 2900xt can be anything upto 215-235 at load. Obviously the 3870 also runs cooler and quieter.

But he also watercools his 3850 doesn't he? Don't think 400Mhz oc is achievable on stock single slot cooler!?
Yes and 1000mhz is a pretty big chunk over stock for even a 3870.

I have seen 3850 users @ 900mhz on some of the better stock coolers like the gecube versions.

I reckon the OCUK cards would do fairly well too with their Zalman esque flower heatsinks.

well consumes less power, i think crossfire 3870 will cosume same amount of powers as one 2900xt. higher memory speeds 2600+ 55 nm dx 10.1

4.1 shader model

No the 3870 consumes a lot less than the 2900XT, SM 4.1, DX10.1 and slightly higher memory speeds dont increase power much, 55nm decreases power consumption.

Crossfire 3870 proberbly consume around the same, the 3870X2 does and thats 2x RV670, might be abit lower.
