Would that be about 50w of fan noise...About 50W
256bit mem bus...That looks like a down grade to me2900:
512Bit mem bus
65nm
DX 10.0
SM 4.0
High power usage
Hot running
Loud Fan
Lower clocked Core
3870XT:
256Bit mem bus
55nm
DX 10.1
SM 4.1
Low Power usage
Cool running
Quiet Fan
Higher clocked Core
It's worth it for the reduction in noise, heat and power usage.
Having run crossfired 2900XT's i wouldn't want to go back.
A decent alternative is the 3850pro. When overclocked they provide similar performance. Ultimately they're identical to 3870's apart from lower clocked cores (lower core voltage being the primary reason) and DDR3 vs DDR4.

If you could get it up there then i'd have no doubt it would be equal. Is a 3850Pro at the same core speed as a 3870XT about equal?
That's right. Pretty much managed a 400mhz overclock which is very impressive. Has it downclocked to around 900mhz now i believe. From what Gurusan did the 3850's pencil modded reach 1Ghz.
Also, the R600 (HD2900 series) is 80nm, not 65nm.

Yes and 1000mhz is a pretty big chunk over stock for even a 3870.But he also watercools his 3850 doesn't he? Don't think 400Mhz oc is achievable on stock single slot cooler!?
well consumes less power, i think crossfire 3870 will cosume same amount of powers as one 2900xt. higher memory speeds 2600+ 55 nm dx 10.1
