moving into a student flat, (room choice fairness)

even the hat sometimes sucks. My g/f did this and when one of the girls got the small room she threw a fit and said she wasn't going to move in. They eventually just let her have what she wanted, but it was pretty crap tbh.

I know exactly what you mean, but imagine if you had the crap room, you may try and force the issue!
 
Just put all the names in a hat and pull them out. First out gets the biggest room, last out gets the smallest those in the middle get rooms based on size.

Job done, has worked for me for the past 2 years.
 
to be fair the room is for you not for you and your gf. your gf isnt the one living there permanantly. How often do you plan ahving her other. The house isnt just your house, you are living with others so you cant just bring whoever whenever. You have to respect everyone else.

i think your house mates are right. Just pick out of a hat and take it on the chin. If you get the smaller room its tough, its not forever, if you see yourself getting married to her then you have the rest of your lives to have a big room with a double bed.
 
in an ideal world it should be a a discount for whoever ends up with the smaller room and everyone should draw at random.

Only fair alternatives that spring to mind would be someone offering to take the smaller room at a greater discount than agreed for the draw.

Or - someone offering a cash incentive to the other three in order to buy the 'option' to be excluded from the draw - you pay for the guarantee of a double room - i.e. the other two with double rooms will be paying less than you as will the guy in the smaller room.

Tbh.. there is a 75% chance you won't end up with a double room so if I were you I wouldn't bother kicking up a fuss about it as you've not yet moved in and already you could cause some bitterness.
 
There'll be resentment on the hat drawing front whatever happens. Offer to pay even more for a bigger room, off-setting the smaller room for someone.
 
IF you choose rooms by who's got a partner should they not pay even more rent as then as they expect said partners to be around often?

tbh.. all three people in the double rooms should pay more to subsidise the guy who draws the small room

someone who wants to buy the option to avoid the draw ought to pay even more on top of that

Already set in stone by landlord,

bigger rooms ar 45 pw smaller is 35pw.

See what happens when we draw then :)
 
thats bloody bloody cheap as far as student houses go. I was paying £52 in leeds last year, it was the cheapest house ever and it showed, it was a dive. I'm paying £68 this year and the house is marrsssif. We're thinking of a 100-150 person houseparty soon. Drawing out of the hat is the only way to pick rooms.

To be fair, thats the one I pulled for my 3rd year of Uni. It's not as if I didn't have plenty of other places I could have gone. I simply put that I get 1 of the big 3 out of 7 rooms or I don't move in, it worked.
