Running my Pc through my LCD TV

All,

I could do with some advice about how to attach my PC (8800 Ultra) through my 32" Samsung LCD (LE32R74BDX) and whether it's worth it. M

1. I know I can connect it via the VGA input but wondered if there was a better way. The TV has a HDMI input (labelled as DVI / HDMI IN but os HDMI connection and component connection (Xbox 360 is using this but happy to change if needed)?

2. The TV runs at 1366 x 768 and my 17" Monitor (NEC MultiSync 175VM+) runs at 1280 x 1024, so what would people recommend?

Many Thanks in advance

Smiler

I got a dongle with my 8800GTS which is a HDMI adapter that plugs into back of card.. didnt you? Its component i think.....

Pretty sure that's the exact same monitor as mine. Just use a DVI-VGA converter to connect your second DVI port on the graphics card to the VGA port on the back of the telly, that's what I do. Then select your resolution (1360x768, but 1366x768 is sharper if you can manage to get it working).

A lot simpler than messing around with HDMI dongles and stuff, and your HDMI is free for other things.

loads of people are using them, they are very very popular due to a lot of them being lower resolution than monitors of same size and therefore usually a fair bit cheaper, without needing a powerhouse graphics card to run at native res.

^^ same, cept i only use tvs at parents house, though we just got another one and its a 1080p so i was concidering getting a GTX instead of my 320gts.

It is very important to get the native resolution working on your LCD as it is much sharper but you might run into problems with over and underscan.

if you're going to play games on a hdtv with that res (i do at the moment) get a card that 'plays fine' at that res an 8800 series card is overkill imo..

Agreed, but I run an 8800GTX at that res and it does mean you can fully ramp up AA/AF without too much FPS damage. Think OP already has an Ultra.

Thanks for the advice, i've decided to order a DVI to HDMI cable for the Video and 3.5mm to RCA for sound to run through TV and then into speaker system.

I understand that the Ultra is overkill but alreay have it installed in PC so won't be changing it :P

Does spending money on PureAV or Monster cables actually make a noticebale differnce??

Not in my experience, but don't but a dirt cheap HDMI cable as they can cause issues. Assuming you don't need one that's longer than normal, £10 to £15 should do it.

Ah ok, I need them about 3m long and was looking at aorund 15 pound a cable so about right.
The monster cables come in at £120 and Pure AV at £40 roughly, not worried about the money but would spend if made a noticable differnce.

I use a 10m hdmi>dvi lead, cheapest one I could find, was about £20
no artifacts or anything, use it for watching movies/playing games up to full 1080p
so I'd just get any cable tbh

I am running my 8800gts 640mb via DVI-HDMI 26" LCD TV 1920,1080 looks bloody fantastic, FULL HD for your movies. Also the picture quality is enhanced when using HDMI so movies do look better, well thats what ive noticed in WMP 11:D
