I'm looking for a hard disk based head unit. I thought there would be loads but looking on CAD I can't find any.

I want to have a large collection of mp3 or flac audio with tags, easy access and browsing.

Everything seems to be 'ipod' compatible or has the abiliity to control your ipod via the head unit.

I don't have an ipod nor do I intend to ever use one. I have a Cowon D2, would this work with such interfaces?

My priority is sound quality.

Bluetooth compatible also, so if I make or receive a call on my phone the music stops and the call can be heard through the speakers instead, if thats possible.

If hard disk units are not available what is the next best recommendation? My budget is up to £400.

you could get a pioneer 7000UB and had a 2.5 external HDD to it i think people have use up to 120 gig on the older model (7900) and as lond as u get a compatiable HDD and dont use extension leads the HDD don't need an external power either.

any way i'm thinking of doing that as my head unit went last week, £190 thats if the head unit is good enough for you or i think clarion do some HDD ones.

I bought a cheap headunit on ebay which has a built-in HDD in a caddy, you just flip the front down and the caddy slides in and out, so you can remove it to fill it up with MP3s.

Shame it's absolutely useless, it just sits there scanning the drive and never actually playing anything. Nice.

I would buy a couple of 16Gb flash drives and a headunit thats compatible with your other criteria.

i put a blaupunkt casablanca in the ex's car, that had a usb port on the back. usb-powered 40gb drive = job done. sits in the glove box and she just plugs it in to the pc when she wants more music on there. i

Vote for a headunit with frontal USB port here. Sony do tiny 4gig microvault tiny's for about 30 quid. Check them out. That's plenty for any journey. It's what I use.
