Is the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme worth the extra money?

Hi all

I have a AC7 Pro right now on a Q6600. The temps are ridiculous, as high as 80 degrees when only at 3.4gig and 1.35v. It was worse before I lapped the CPU and HSF, then it was 90 degrees.

There are only two heatsink and fans I really see recommended on here and thats the AC7 Pro and the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme. However I'm REALLY struggling with justifying the expense of the Thermalright. It comes to almost £65 by the time you include the cost of the lapping kit that will need to be used on it's less than flat surface

£65 is a LOT of money.

Is there no other cooler that is recommended but better than the AC7 Pro, preferrably one that has a mounting system that does NOT use those cr@p push pins. I don't trust them at all. I want something that is quiet and uses a backing plate on the back of the motherboard so I know it's creating the proper pressure on the CPU without bending the board, or suffering from being less than secure

Any suggesions people? I need some help here. Or can the excessive price of the Thermalright AIR cooler be justified?

Cheers

Lovely, I've ordered one of those and a fresh lapping kit

Anyone want a beautifully lapped AC7 Pro? Perfect if you have a dual core, just don't bother if you had a highly overclocked quad...

Stone if you are getting rid of it, I am interested. It will be perfect for my sons computer that I am building.

Hi

I've not decided what I'm doing with it yet. My new cooler is in the post so I'll fit it then and see where I want to go then. I'll probably stick the old one up in the MM but shipping would cost a few quid thanks to it's weight.

If you have bought a tuniq tower you should not need to lapp it, as the 1 I have was perfectly flat, and I thought I would lapp it, and had no change in temps.

Hi fella

I wouldn't be able to rest knowing I had not done it while I had the chance so I will be doing it anyway. The Q6600 I have now is a hot beast and it could well make a difference.

Its true you dont always have to lap, sometimes it can just be a cosmetic exercise.

The best way to test is fairly simple imo, get a razer blade and place it against the flat surface. Sharp edge on, the room should be totally dark. Get a torch and shine it on the other end of the razer blade and if any light at all comes through at the sharp end of the blade then its obviously very unflat and needs lapping otherwise dont bother.

cost of the lapping kit

You only need a piece of wet and dry sandpaper. You need to level it off not polish it

The Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme looks good (and big), but does anyone know if it will fit in a Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case?? My temps are high and I need a descent fan.

Cheers in advance.

I noticed that my TRUE wasn't flat at all, I could see light coming from just underneath it and out the sides as well.
Now my temps are about 21-25c idle and about 38-40 full load but thats at stock settings and I'm planning on overclocking it so will that hinder me at all?
Or should that be ok?

Sorry just realised I hijacked the thread also wanted to say I've been happy with the TRUE so far without oc'ing it.
