Microsoft must pay $1.4bn to EU

What exactly do they do with these fines once they get it paid? Buy cuban cigars, bigger cars and slap each other on the back for once again "pwning" the american atm machine known as Microsoft? :o

EU cash cow tbh. That's all I think I need to say about that. :/

It's quite clear the EU Commission doesn't understand the software industry.

Remember the fuss the eu kicked up when microsoft had the sheer gall to ship windows with windows media player as part of the OS (like every version of windows since 95). pretty laughable.

Microsoft's software like IE takes advantage of low level calls in the operating system that only microsoft programmers can know about and utilise.

The EU competition commission wants Microsoft to make the low level information available to people like Mozilla so that they can make their software better and faster, and compete on an even footing.

Ever wondered why Internet Explorer loads so fast? It's because Internet Explorer is built and tied in so deeply to the OS.

It's like Ford making only half the horsepower available on a car if you decide to change the wheels.

Indeed.

They say its all to get the competition up to a higher level etc so they compete with MS more. But MS isnt going to give up any info at all about their OS or apps in it. Why the hell would they and why should they?

What the hell is taking the spare spare change from MS going to do? It may help if they actaully gave the money to other people who are trying to make OS to compete with Windows but they dont.

They are just doing it so they get a nice bonus to spend on a summer holidays.

Barstewards the lot of them to be honest.

so maybe IE shouldn't have been an integral part of windows

if windows came without IE or wmp, the average joe would be royally screwed

it's not as if IE and WMP keep trying to take their associations back after you've installed new software

shouldn't there be an iLawsuit or something soon? lol

Gotta love the EU, zero help for the actual customers, zero help for the companies, just a big fine in their coffers and more threatening behaviour...

And yet they still refuse to tackle the Ipod/Itunes monopoly that is far more restrictive and Apple actually act specifically to ensure it's restrictive...

The irony, of course, of this fine, being that the entire idea was pretty much the EU saying "You didn't read our minds and do what we wanted but didn't tell you" when trying to sort the remedy.

Yeah how is it apple go untouched? Oh wait not as deep pockets so they can just slip by along with DJ spinmaster Jobs.

Maybe the eu get ipods in their yearly kickba..err sorry christmas stocking from apple. :D

Actually the Media Player thing is like BMW selling you a car with a flush fitted radio that fits perfectly, but means that every time you fit a third party radio it ends up looking awful becuase they've not use industry standard DIN sized head unit holes, basically precluding the use of third party radios without hassle.

Oh wait, this is exactly what they did with my car.

If they did they'd have taken this action a long time ago.

Apple/iTunes monopoly is currently being investigated. They need to investigate a lot quicker imo.
