Cheery eh? :D

Well I was just wondering if it is something that is generally in the psyche of people or not. I don't mean scared it's actually going to happen in the near future but just generally habour a fear of it. I have quite a morbid fascination with it, ever since I watched Threads several years ago (which gave me depression and stopped me sleeping.)

The thought chilled me to bone, and I joined the CND, which although a possibly futile movement, it's worth a crack, imo.

Anyway I just wondered whether i'm a freak or whether this is something that other share to an extent. The nuclear paranoia has been an embedded part of pop-culture for years after all.

Discuss :p

It isn't a matter of if a Western country is going to be hit with a nuclear bomb of some sort, but more like when.

Between the nuclear powers, there are more than 20 'lost' and untraceable warheads

Good god man, be a man.

I try not to think about it, as it is quite a scary and depressing thought

But if it did happen, I think the sheer scale of it would mean you wouldn't know much about it. Once one is launched, everyone would launch one

Nope, not scared, death is a part of life. If it happens by natural causes or some nut bag shooting nukes at us.

Que sera sera.

I've seen Threads and it is indeed disturbing but there's better things to worry about.

Try reading ' The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the 21st Century' for something more relevant to worry about.

In my defense, it didn't solely give me depression, but it did stop me sleeping :p

It's a powerful bit of tv that, affects a lot of people.

With all the other 'outs' mankind has, that seems a nice way to go :)

Or we all drown, starve, go mad, burnup, die in our own blood, get invaded and made slaves, lose all the banking systems, viruses.....

Lots of other ways out for us, war is just one of them things humans are good at. God help the universe if we ever get out that far!

Nah not really. The way I see it is as long as terrorists don't get hold of any nukes there's barely any chance of there being a nuclear bomb being set off ever again, it just wouldn't make sense.

Yes IF it happened. However the chances of it happening are so remote I don't care. I would highly recommend people watch a film called Threads (its on google video and possible you tube - you'll know its the right one as theres a spider at the beginning). The film is based in sheffield and depicts the sort of thing that would happend from a nuclear war. Warning - it made me feel so grim for days after watching it, if you get upset easily then i'd say dont watch it. The film isnt 100% accurate ass to what would happen obviously, and t makes a point but i would recommend seeing it and would also be interested in others views in the film

I worry about being nuked from orbit

Seriously though, Threads was an eye opener although I had a good knowledge before I watched it.

My mum and dad tell me that in the late 70's and early 80's the "Protect and survive" adverts used to scare them as they would often be shown if there was stuff in the news relating to Cold War unrest.

They also knew how futile making a home shelter would be, and I guess just having a baby (me) must have made the whole situation even more terrifying.

Wrong attitude, I'm afraid.

The more technology progresses, the more likely smaller countries are to be able to build their own nukes.

As such, the main deterrent is having our own. It won't deter utter lunatics who don't care about their own lives or the lives of their citizens, but it stopped the Russians and Americans from launching during the Cold War and it's working at the moment pretty well too.

What would we do if the CND got rid of all our nukes, then someone threw one at us? Just sit and cry?

We're at that delicate stage in Civilisation in between getting the Bomb and developing the missile shield that protects you from it.
