As title. I've already got an HD3870X2 which is running in a gigabyte X38-DS5 with a (soon to be E8400 wolfie). Is it possible to Xfire the X2 with an XT, do I need these cat 8.3 drivers that supposedly enable XfireX (which I don't kniow if I'll need or not), both cards will run at x16 going by the spec of the mobo anyways, so is it worth it? considering the XT cards seem to be dropping in price and I've never tried Xfire or SLi, and I fancy having a play:p
Any other alternatives considered.

From what i have heard and read about Crossfire X, you should be able to crossfire a 3870X2 and a 3870XT. Afterall the point of Crossfire X is to allow support for triple and quad GPUs (even using different models). Running a 3870X2 and a 3870XT would really be the same as runnign 3x 3870XT cards as far as the drivers were concerned, ishould think. As to whether its worth it depends on a few things like what games you play (FPS i would imagine), what res you paly at and do you want to play Crysis at max!?

3 seems to be the magic number with Crossfire ATM, only CoD4 really gets a boost from 4 GPU's.

That might change with drivers, but for now adding a 3rd does give good gains.

Considering it myself actually :D

Some useful info there, cheers guys. Other than the reason stated in me original post, theres not a lot happening on the vidcard front, you know, a blistering fast card thats all singing, all dancing arriving shortly, so to get decent, cost effective gains I thought this was an ideal way to go. I assume that I'll need a 512mb card otherwise the system will only recognise the lower amount of memory, is this correct?
I'll have look at the MM and if anythings available after I'read the info in those links.:)

Forgot to mention this, me monitor only goes up to 1680 x 1050, what sort of impact does this have on what I fancy trying otu?

Yeah just noticed that myself, 4 way doesnt seem to offer much but then maybe with driver improvements and the crossfire driver heres hoping.

Sorta weird cos before I never use to imagine crossfire/sli tech but over the last year or so its now becoming an option, more so since Nvidia/ATI arent bothering to release new faster cards, more about effiecency and scaleability and scaling 3-4 cheap 120-140 quid type cards I think :)

Wouldnt it be funny though if either release 1 single card that could outdo 4 GPUS work ;)

Anyone?:) I've sourced a coupla these cards already for good money, 'frinstance the ocuk 3870XT vershun is only 110 squid plus del. Second hand would obviously be preferred though. Saying that, it does use GDDR4, would that have impact on what I'm trying to achieve?
