I need a new bicycle, I think.

cheers :D

37 quid a year dont seem bad at all :D.

So if my bike got stolen or damaged, how would I prove to them it was not me who damaged my bike or went and dumped it into some ditch somewere?

Same way as with any other insurance i suppose, yea its a nice thing to have if your bikes worth a few hundred quid, remember you would need to stick at least £30 on top of that to budget for a proper lock

Don't forget to use another lock for the front wheel, and replace the seatpost bolt with a fixed type. Someone nicked a cheap saddle/seatpost from mates bike.

Oooo yep forgot about that I usually put my d lock through the front wheel and fork and then wrap a cheapie cable lock round the back wheel obviously not going to stop anyone that really wants my back wheel but i cant imagine that being too much of a problem

Just buy the right frame size. That bike is a flat bar road bike, however it only has a single front chainwheel, so I'd take a test ride- go up the steepest hill, and spring along a flat (to see if the range of gears is wide enough)

Don't buy blind as you'll probably get the incorrectly sized frame.

I dont know anywere that'll do that revoloution bike or that lets people test ride, the only shops around I know is halfords and these 2 little bike shops.

My saracen has 7 gears at back, and on the front derailer its never off 3, so basically all I ever use is the top 7 gears, so I think that bike with 8 gears will be enough.

But because of the design, you're going to use higher gearing. For example if I fitted the MTB gearing (which are generally small up front, large on the rear) on my road bike I'd probably never use the two small front, in fact I'd probably run out of gears.

Although single front chainwheel does save weight, reduces cost and maintence. Have you seen Nexus hub gearing? (9 gears) It's more expensive but no deraillers at all. I haven't rode one so cannot comment on the gear range.

Halfords Carrera bike range isn't too shabby, although I'd check it over as the Halfords idiots might not put it together properly.

Hmm so when I get to full speed on my Saracen bike, and I'm pedelling too fast, does it mean I've ran out of gears? I feel it would have been much better with ane extra gear or too or even new gear cogs on back with a smaller 7th gear. The cheapest bike in halfords last time I looked was about £400 for a Carrera bike.

The cheapest road bike is £224.99 (Virtuoso ) and the cheapest flat bar road bike is £325 (Gryphon )

If you're interested in hub gearing, look at the Subway 8. It's basically a MTB with road tyres though.

If you're on the front large wheel, rear smallest wheel then you've run out of gears, and you need higher gearing. Probably got 42-11 on a MTB, on a road bike 52-13 Usually on my road bike to use 52 front you have to be going at least 28mph, usually 30-35.

MTB gearing isn't aimed at speed, they're used for slower speeds where you need torque.

So with the amount of energy it takes me to get to 30mph on my saracen at which point I'm peddling too fast to go any faster, I could be using the same amount of energy or less on a decent road bike to go even faster? Yea most of the time I'm always in the last gear and most of the time I'm going slow and peddling fast, bit annoying really.

I see you bought a small road bike, are you pretty short? I'm 5'8" with a 32" inside leg, and ride a medium. If you find it painful to ride on the hoods, and have to have the seat 6"+ high to get your legs straight at 6 o clock then you've bought the wrong bike. You can alter the head tube, TT do that and buy tiny bikes, but they're right over the front wheel with seatpost 12" from the frame, with aero bars.

If you were to ride on road bike you'll reach higher speeds at a lesser level of execursion, and keep those speeds higher (because of the lower resistance) to a clunky MTB. If you're in top gear on a MTB, and peddling like a madman you need higher gearing. On a roadie 52/11 tops off about 40mph.

Yea I bought a small road bike and crashed today so its locked up 15 miles away at college now gonna pick it up tomorrow. I will have to live with it been too small I cannot afford to buy another bike and I cant return the one I bought 4-5 weeks ago.

On maximum gear I rekon at about 35mph I'd be pedaling pretty fast and running out of gear hitting near 40mph but I cant push hard enough or even sustain fast speeds so it does not matter.

Sell it for a loss...and next time buy correct size. I certainly wouldn't keep a bike that's too small. Why did you ignore people's advice here, or didn't you ask?

I tried to return it, at the time I never kenw it was too small for me, I'm going to sell it and not buy a new bike, not after having a crash I'm just an accident waiting to happen.

How did you crash?

I was at a junctions, well coming up to one, lights went red so I slowed down then they went green so I started to speed up but before I checked to see if anyone was turning left and no one was indicating, then as soon as I got up to the junctions a car turned left and did not indicate pushing me to the railings and then into the side of his car and I fell off and damaged the bike.

Assuming it has not been stolen or totally trashed tomorrow I will get it picked up and take it back to halfords and get it fixed under warranty and then sell it.

So they overtook and turned left in front of you? Remember to ride more aggresively, don't be all the way to the left.

Don't let a minor crash put you off cycling. I've done several thousand miles and only had one minor incident - in Stoke. Done more damage to his car then to me. Scratched his car down the right side, and took his wing mirror off. Again turned left in front of me.
