Ok, OK so I'm a few years late but I just completed it after buying it a few weeks ago, my God what a game. Seriously one of the best if not THE best game I have ever played. Seemed like such a lengthy game, with an amazing plot with superb characters, the ending was touching and I did not expect that to happen at all, I genuinely thought Tom would have been safe but I guess it goes to show even he had it coming to him in the end. .

The only thing that annoyed me at times was not being able to save on the fly, this made the game a tad tedious as it required driving over half the city to get weapons and then go back if you were arrested or killed, this got frustrating. Also the Police were a bit phsycic at times and also tedious which resulted in me driving slow a lot of the time just so I wouldn't get pulled over and mess up a mission.

I just hope Mafia 2 can live up to it's predecessor and be as equally awesome.

Yep gotta agree with ya, best game i've ever played and I still play it to this day.

I found it a bit boring myself some missions were just dull. I stoped when i had to steal a yellow roadster or somit i kept getting caught and just couldnt be bothered to play it anymore. Wasnt too bad in some areas tho. Definatly not like gta i thought which it was supose to be like i think.

Truly awesome game that I'll always consider one of the best. My only gripe was the driving/race mission part way through

Not convinced this was ever supposed to be like GTA. Yes it's free roaming/driving but the story and development was in another league compared to GTA. Don't get me wrong the GTA games rock, but they lacked an epic story with character development, which Mafia focused on. Having said that driving in Mafia was not thrilling, but on foot it was excellent.

Mafia is an absolute classic. One of the best games I've ever played on any format. Really need to go back and play it again, tbh.

Can't wait for the sequel.

Yep loved this game, although couldn't get past the racing level :(

I stuck with it and managed to complete that mission after 4-5 attempts. It basically boiled down to you could not crash more than once if I remember correctly. When I borrowed the game to a friend he passed that mission with a cheat

Not meant to be anything like GTA. Its better, IMO.

Absolutely loved some of the missions, and all the driving/police just added to the involvement, I certainly wouldn't criticise the game because of it.

But the story, the voice acting and the ending were just epic. Played it many times and its still great.

Quite a few of the voice actors are in Soprano's....

I did struggle with the driving mission aswell until I plugged in a controller and then passed it first time, driving with a controller is infinitely better in Mafia.

I also enjoyed it more than GTA, Epic game gutted I've completed it though :(. Hope the next one rolls around soon.

Yeah, superior to GTA if I'm honest. Combat was always a bit simple and cheesy in GTA whereas Mafia nearly reached Max Payne quality combat. Loved the characters and story too. I even liked all the driving bits (although I had to connect up a steering wheel to do the racing bit), even when you had to drive carefully it just added to the realism and therefore gave the story more weight. There was also a nice sense of car ownership with them all sparkling in the garage and picking your car for each mission. Had some great missions too.

Really must play it again.

Yea it was also nice to see the car yard fill up with all your cars from the missions, pick one, then pick up a weapon from vincenzo and get out and onto the mission.

The dock mission was fun with the exploding tanker. Also the Kill Frank mission was interesting and oozing with great storyline and depth.

Even if they had stuck with the old engine for Mafia 2 I would have been happy, it wasn't about the graphics with this game it was so much more.

Play free ride extreme now, still has 40 of mini missions iirc :p.
You can unlock loads of extra cars with it for freeride.

I can't renember much of the ending missions, but I can recall it having an awesome story and good missions.
Liked the car race mission quite a lot, took me ages till I finally won.

Yep I'll be moving onto that now Snow.

I seemed to get a few texture glitches when playing it though, feel it may be the NVIDIA drivers?

Also the shadows seem to flicker, bit annoying.

Seemed to be fine last time I tryed, both in xp and vista.
Have you patched your game ?

Was with a 6800GS back then though, 169.xx or 163.xx drivers though so it should be same on 8800's...

EDIT:

Shadows seem fine ( ignore the jaggies, was v1.00 wich had borked AA :p) and I can't renember any flickering, so I'm sure it was fine on mine. Try messing around with nvidia profiles perhaps ?

EDIT2: I have a vague memory of it flickering in vista now that I think a bit harder, I dunno for sure though, in xp I played it without flickering anyways.

Hehe. Now you come to mention I always remember a problem with shadows with this game. I'm talking many years ago now when it was released, but I definetely remember a slight shadow problem. Sorry can't even begin to suggest a fix.

Awesome game for its time, still looks good and has a great story what a lot of games have not had for years.

The Grand Prix, hardest level ever with keys, just kept spinning on corners.

It's the best game I've ever come across imo. It takes elements from almost every hollywood gangster movie and blends them into one hell of an atmospheric title with a brilliant storyline. I just select easy mode for the grand prix level, which was introduced in a patch due to complaints about it's difficulty :)
