Pelican PlayStation 3 Charge Station, review by IGN here >http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/828/828344p1.html

I was thinking of picking one up in town today, just wondering is anyone has brought one and can tell me if they think they are any good, build quality etc, @ £30 it's quite expensive but it looks pretty neat and it could save me plugging in that daft small charging cable you get with the PS3, basically before I go to bed at night I would just pop my controllers on there, what you think guys, worth 30 quid ?

Looks pretty nifty actually. I reckon it'd serve its purpose well. Im interested to hear about the build quality too.

I hate things like this tbh. ripoffs when you can buy a long usb cable for a couple of quid.

My mate has bought 2 of the the ones that charge individual controllers (not sure which brand).

I wouldn't pay £30 for the convenience of "dropping" it into the docking station when I can just plug in a USB cable.

I can;t understand how companies can make money out of a recharging solution when the ps3 comes with one out of the box (albeit with only 1M suppressed USB cables).

The problem with all these chargers is that the Playstation 3 needs to be fully powered on to charge them. It's a bit silly really. Why couldn't they have designed the console to charge controllers like the X360?

I like it, think it looks good, the fact that it charges from the mains would be useful as well. I'll probably look into getting one, more for the aesthetics than anything else as it buggs me hvaing a cable dangling out of my Ps3.

The pelican one charges the controllers from an ac adapter - no need to plug it into your PS3.

Given the PS3 does sit in a standby mode, it's crazy that it doesn't charge the controllers really.

In that case I'll br getting one. I've been looking for a solution to this problem for a while.

Do you think they could fix this in a future firmware upgrade or do you think it's a hardware limitation and therefore not possible?

Whappers.

As a total and utter guess, I would like to think it could be done via firmware, but I couldn't say with any sort of fact.

I would say firmware updates would be possible. The reason for this guess is that it is possible to remotely turn on the PS3 via wifi using a PSP - if this is possible it suggests the PS3 is still half awake and power could possibly be supplied to the USB ports.

Still a guess tho.

Maybe it is possible now, I turned on the option of turning on my PS3 with my PSP but as it turns out that also means the fan on the PS3 keeps spinning when it is in standby which is annoying.
Maybe when it is standby like that there is alo power to the USB ports?

Anyway I also never found recharging a problem, whenever I am playing and get the message the power is low I grab a long USB cable, plug it in and continue playing and shut down the PS3 when it is recharged.

I think I'll be buying one of these :)

Looks really smart and is quite a good idea. I know there are other things out there that do the same job but I really like the look of this solution
