I'm a little confused over the whole VW spec thing so what oil should I be using for my Octavia on regular 10k servicing?

As far as I can tell Castrol Edge 5W30 should do the trick but I just wanted confirmation before I bought some.

Also is it worth buying oil online? I haven't shopped around as such yet (mainly because I wasn't 100% sure what I needed) but I know that the Edge 5W30 that I mentioned is around £45 for 4L at Halfords.

TIA

If anyone has any specific questions about VAG engines and oil, please let me know. :)

Edge 5W-30 is fine for normal servicing. SLXIII is the dealer oil and is used for active servicing.

Main thing is to get an oil with the spec that your handbook recommends.

Is that the fully synth?

If so you can get Castrol Edge 5W30 + Oil filter service at National for £28 !

Just ask to observe the work while they do it so you know what they're up to

Cheers for all the help  TBH My main confusion was from a website (oilman I think) stating that you should use 5W30 for longlife servicing and 10W40 for standard servicing

Anyway I'll just check what VW spec mine should be running and if all matches up I'll go for Edge.

I'm supplying my own oil and having my regular guy do the full works on it this time round but I'll definately give national a look when I get my next service done and do any other odds and ends myself.

Semi Synth in the 1.8T causes Oil Sludge, you should always use fully synth.

I would never use 10w40 in a 1.8T, its simply the wrong oil.

Its listed as an "alternative" on some websites for the vRS but only for cars built up to 2002. Not sure what changed after that to make it unsuitable

EDIT- oops, won't link directly

From the Castrol site
