Hi all, I don't often venture into Motors, but I figured I (or rather, my dad) could use some advice!

As thread title really. My Dad's Laguna's gearbox is on it's way out and it's getting on a bit so a change of car is in order.

His eye is on a 55-plate Kia Magentis 2.0 SE, 13,000 miles, fully loaded with kit apparently, for £6k. BUT, it's the pre-facelift model, and it's a Kia Magentis. I think he might have already put a deposit down on it too... but it's not too late is it?

His requirements are that it's an auto, well equipped, mileage below about 45,000 and not too old. On a budget but I think he could stretch up to £9k. He also has to be able to part-ex the old Laguna, so that's a no for private sales?

He's also looking at a 2001 Honda Accord 2.0 Executive, for about £6.5k, these any good?
I did a little searching and came up with a

54 plate Peugeot 407 2.0 HDi with 34,000 miles, £8.5k
54 plate Subaru Legacy 2.5i SE with 11,000 miles, £7.5k

What do you guys reckon to these? Also, how come the Legacy is so cheap?? I thought they'd be much more than that. Any other recommendations would be much appreciated, thanks. Or indeed, if anyone can justify the Kia, then by all means do so! :)

Sounds like a lost cause. The Accord seems ridiculously overpriced - £6.5k for a 2001 Accord? Absolute madness, probably double what its worth.

Does your father realise that 45,000 miles on a Kia is roughly like 200,000 miles on a good car?

Lost cause? Agh, don't say that :(

Thoughts on the 407 and the Legacy? Also been trying to find newer Accords (facelift) but not many locally it seems...

Yeah it's a Kia but it is the best model out there and it isn't a little io or something. a 55 plate Cruiser for £6k? Gotta be reasonable VFM and your dad will be happy with the trim level. Sure, at 80k it'll be worn badly but I bet he never hits that mark anyway. Google is your friend, search around for owners opinions mate.

Thanks for the advice :) (and radderfire and Fox)

Yeah, I admit that it looks like pretty good value for money for what it is, trim level etc. Doubt there's another similarly specced car of that age and mileage for that price. Googling reveals that most owners seem happy, no common faults, just a general consensus that it's just a bit dull and cheap bits inside, but like you say, good for what it is, and particularly cheap buying used. I personally think it looks hideous though!

Just been speaking to him and he seems to be heading towards dropping the Kia now though in favour of the 407? Anyone know much about them, good car? problems etc?

Peugeots are reasonable second hand buys and I expect they're quite economical to run. Although I have never sat in a Kia I would expect it to have a rather plasticcy interior and that would detract from the driving experience for me.

Peugeot 407 = not a bad choice IMO. I personally would probably buy a Toyota Avensis or Ford Mondeo - both very competent cars and reliable. I suggest some test drives.

we use 407sw 1.6hdi here as reps cars.

Been using pugs for over 20 years but relibility problems with these were that big they have switched to passats.

The problem with the Kia is it will lose around 70-80% of it's value in 3 years of ownership at average miles.

If you can afford that sort of cost you may aswell contract hire something decent and brand new.
