Car woes - am I being ripped off?

My car broke on Saturday - the clutch hydraulics failed and it is currently in the garage. They have said it will need new hydraulic cylinders since they were leaking. They have also said the rear brake pads were fairly worn so it will need new pads, and discs apparently so they bed in properly. I have been quoted £700 for all this including labour and VAT.

Does that sound about right? The car's only done 30,000 miles so I'm a bit wary of them sayig the brakes are shot already. Is it normal to take a car in for one thing and be told other things need fixing? I'm worried I'm being ripped off :(

I would tell them "thank you very much for informing me about the condition of my brakes, but please just do the work that I booked it in for, and replace the clutch components"

you dont need new discs for the brakes to bed in.....they will bed in fine. As long as your old discs are not scored badly or cracked or worn down to the minimum level required for MOT.

As far as clutch cylinder have no idea on labour time...

30k miles for a set of brakes is not long enough?? :) Granted they are rears but still, that's quite a lot of miles (unless you do 30k a year on the motorway etc, in which case ignore me :) )

Oh sorry, I thought they came in in 05. Have you asked on a more specific forum, if its a regular thing than VW may fix it as a goodwill gesture. They have been doing with the Lupo pedal boxes

:(

Apparently the problem is not to do with the clutch cylinders, its to do with the clutch itself. So they've knocked off the labour (so it's now £380) and are taking it to another garage to get a new clutch put in.

I need the car for tomorrow morning!!
