Goldeneye (64) on Xbox Live Arcade?

The supposed "real" reason it was cancelled,

Last week, CVG reported that, GoldenEye would be making it to XBLA. However, an actual quote from the Magazine says otherwise about the real reason behind the cancellation of the title.

The magazine writes:
"This is no hoax. This is no fan-made ROM hack, PC Source mod or Photoshop fake. This is no joke, and contrary to the date on the cover, this is no April Fool either. This is the Nintendo 64's GoldenEye running on the Xbox 360, made by Rare, published by 007 license holders Activision and released over Live Arcade by Microsoft - and it's the best game you'll never play.

GoldenEye was set for release in the middle of this year, until it was cancelled late in 2007, apparently at the behest of Nintendo. As Oddjaw tells it, Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime was supposedly completely behind the idea, knowing well what the project would mean to gamers, especially when the deal was sweetened by Rare's offer to port the game to Wii, while making the rest of their back catalogue available on the Virtual Console.

The agreement between the parties allowed the game to be developed almost to completion before Nintendo's Japanese boss Satoru Iwata decided that under absolutely no circumstances would Nintendo allow the game to see release on another platform. While Ninty apparently have neither rights to the code nor any legal means to block the release, it's rumoured that the threat to Activision's relationship with Nintendo was enough for them to disband the project."

Very silly move by Iwata if true, cant understand why he would say no to all that, wouldnt hurt the Wii one bit infact i think it would have been more of a benefit to Nintendo than Microsoft.

If true then he's a complete fool.

admire them for what?

I agree with Stokefan to be honest.

IF Goldeneye is such a memorable event in gamers history, then why should they re-release it and let the 'new' gaming public think it's crap.

It just will NOT compete with todays standards.

We're seeing this time and time again on XBLA with old/retro games appearing with graphics touched up and they are just absolute rubbish.

JetPac for XBLA anyone? FANTASTIC game on the Spectrum, jeez the memories I have on that are touching, but do I wanna play it on my console despite touched up graphics. No, 'cos it's just a rubbish concept now.

Playing an 'old' game today is just so tiresome, but remembering how I use to play it is joyful.

You just can't combine the two - ever.

I agree in principle, yet SF2:HF on XBLA proves to be an exception.

well, what J said really.

Goldeneye is a part of gaming heritage. This will be altered from a re release; so Nintendo trying to stop it for whatever reason strikes a chord with me. Its like they're trying to maintain those memories for what they were.

I disagree because there are some exceptions. I still have my N64 ready for play on those rare occasions you manage to get four mates in front of a TV screen (which is very rare these days). We play all the classics like Diddy Kong, Turok etc. We never get bored of Goldeneye even today.

I do agree with Nintendo's decision though. Nintendo were a huge part of what made Rare great and worked very closely with them on all their titles. (A reason why i think Rare suck now because M$ are just no where near as good as Ninty when it comes to first party developer support) GE:64 is one of Nintendo's top 10 games of all time for sure so why would they let them release it on a rival platform when it can be on theres.
