Long story short I have a new job starting in Sept, planning on flying out to Australia for 5 months in a few weeks just for a change of scenery and to work.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of things I might want to consider!

More importantly though I need to work while im out there, I was thinking it might be a nice idea to try and get work in a ski resort – how would I go about this? Are there any agencies that would specialise in this sorta thing? I don’t really care about getting paid or having a good job, I just want something interesting.

Alternatively what would you choose to do?

Go to some of the aborigine villages and towns so that you can really appreciate your quality of life there.

Backpacking is a good way to see a decent amount of the country on limited funds, in a short space of time. Get yourself an Australian YHA pass (click here) and try to hook up with some other backpackers when you arrive. There's safety in numbers, and you'll be glad of the company. I once shared a room with a couple of South African backpackers in Hobart after meeting them on the bus from the airport. Great fun. :)

Click here, mate. It'll do for a start. Never been skiiing myself, but my friends recommend Mt Buller and Thredbo. You're really spoilt for choice, tbh.

Being an Aussie myself, I'd spend time with my family and friends. :)

Thredbo, Perisher Blue, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo, Falls Creek, Selwyn Snowfields, Kosciusko.

And they're a good size, too. Perisher Blue alone covers 1,250 hectares.

Aye I looked it up after I posted. Surprised me they have so many!

Still though, if you live here and want skiing I wouldn't recommend going to Australia. There would be much better in Europe.

Surely there must be something more Summery to do there? I would just recommend a bit of travelling and bar work, it's easy to find, you wont be tied down to a single part of the country of for a length of time and will meet lots of people.

Alternatively, maybe some work with animals or in rainforests or adventure tours or something? Skydiving instructor?

One thing to consider is that you'll probably want a working visa from the aus embassy if you intend to work whilst on your holiday.
I've got a feeling it might be hard to obtain though.

Not difficult at all; Australia has a reciprocal agreement with the UK for working holiday visas.

Aloreth, your best option is V417 (Working Holiday Visa; click here for details). This gives you 12 months to travel and work in Australia. It is dead easy to obtain; as long as you're a British citizen aged between 18-30, you will be eligible for this visa.

But if you're over 30, you might just have to get a holiday visa and hope to pick up some "cash in hand" work on the sly.

Whoops I may have forgotten one rather crucial point - I hold an Australian passport! Advice on VISA etc is much appreciated but not necessarily relevant!

Hey, we've got everything from ski slopes to deserts; eucalyptus forests to wetlands; white water rapids to tropical rainforests.

It's a bloody big country, folks.

:)

Well it is an entire continent, so it's bound to have quite a wide variety of landscapes.

Will the slopes be that great though, considering it will be Summer in Aus and not winter? Or are they all year round slopes?

Australia does have some all year slopes (Falls Creek; Mt Buller; possibly Thredbo as well). I imagine that Kosciusko is pretty reliable too.
