Anyone used one of these before (Oil change pump)

Fantastic for boats where someone has inevitably put a bracket right in the way of the sump plug though. For cars, just take the plug out, if nothing else its free!

I've got one of these and it works fine - useful for all sorts of fluids. A lot of garages use them too. My car has an undertray thats a right PITA to remove and I've never been a fan of crawling under cars axel stands.

I don't agree about it leaving crud in the sump - certainly no more than removing the plug. Every car I've had unless you leave the drain out for hours you always get a little trickle of oil remaining and this seems to get everything out. The gunk that will cause damage will be in suspension in the oil anyway.

My only concern would be ensuring that you are getting all the old oil out. If the end is not quite at the bottom of the sump, or you have stuffed too much in and it's started rising again, it won't remove all the oil. I suppose you would know how much you have taken out, and be able to guesstimate if that is the right amount, but I'm not sure I'd trust it 100%

It would have been useful the other day when I slightly overfilled the car though.

OT but what problems can you face if you overfill ?

Have one, use it every time to suck the oil out. The first time, after extracting as much as I could I removed the sump and hardly any oil came out, never bothered after that.

Makes life much easier for me as I have to drive onto my mini-ramps before I can get a jack under the car and then have to deal with the PITA undertray.

Can have the oil drained and refilled in 5 mins with the Pela :)

Well, it depends, but the general consensus is that it's a bad idea. The issues range from lots of blue smoke, blown oil seals and the oil becoming "frothed" by the crank, causing a lack of lubrication, depending on who you speak to, and what engine is in question.

Some people will tell you they have overfilled by miles and had no issues, others will say they have had engines go bang very quickly because it was overfilled.

Do a google for oil overfill and have a read.
