GeForce 9800 GX2, 9800 GTX & 3870 X2 3DMark 06 Compared

Nvidia are breaking their own naming convention with that 9xxx brand. It's misleading to customers. This is not next-gen stuff.

To be honest I'm glad, my GTX will become well worth what I paid for it. It's a disappointment really, the 9000 series would suggest next-gen. I'm glad for ATI though, judging by this they finally caught a break with their 3870x2.

He means they're breaking the obvious pattern they've set since the 6 Series.

Do you mean naming of the cores or actual graphics support when it comes down to DirectX version (if thats what you mean by next gen)... either way there is no pattern at all.

We mean the usual cycle of...

#800 = Good
- Ultra = Best.
- GTX = Second best (as of 7 Series)
- GT = Still good, and cheap too

#900 = Refresh of #800 (as of 7 Series)

#600 = Mainstream

#Rest = Cack for gaming.

In the 7 Series we had the second digit of 9 to represent a refresh, and #950 to represent a further refresh. The 9 Series really should be called 8900s as they're just that, refreshes of the 8 Series, but I guess they saw that AMD got away with calling the 2900 refresh '3800' and decided to follow suit.

The 8 Series made a lot of sense until the 8800GT and new GTS came about, it's all to pot now.

Still as pointed out before wonder how comes Nvidia struggled so badly to get there next set of cards out...considering there just 2006 fine tuned cards.

ATI although wobbly at times always seem to roll out newer faster/tweeked/shorter and better cards every few weeks in comparisions !

I think the trend for Nvidia/ATI is they spent a lot of money onto there new next gen cards and there just gonna milk it as much as they can, let the customer get 2-3 el cheapo variants and get the boost they require that way.

Proberly wont even see a Next Gen card for 2008, the 3800 and 9800 series is it ;)

I cant believe that the 9800 GTX would only be slightly better than the 8800 GTX, no sensible person would release such a product, I think it will be a bigger difference, not much but certainly bigger.

Yup, the 9800GTX should be called the 8900GTX, nothing but a refresh. Pontless.

I would've also called the 9600GT an 8900GT.

bfar's comment says "This is not next-gen stuff." thats why I thought he was talking about naming of "next gen" stuff. Not just whats the best etc etc. ;)

You mean you cannt believe its only slightly better than the 8800 GTS, seen as thats all it is. But no dought it will come with a price hike.

You can't really judge the card based on the single benchmark in the OP's post surely !!!

Well its not really that hard to assume yourself what the performace will be like seen as its basically comfirmed what specs the cards are going to be.

9800GX2 = two 8800 GTS
9800GTX = overclocked GTS

with little tweaks here and there, they are obviously only going to be a bit faster.

Yeah, im thinking that too. Im also thinking about the fact that they probably werent even using day1 release quality drivers, which surely must make a diference?

My gut reaction was to stop waiting for the GX2 and buy a 3870X2 tonight, but i think ill wait untill it comes out and we see some proper drivers for it.

Their whole naming convention lost any semblance of sense when they re-launched the 8800GTS, as we then had a situation where a new (albeit only a refresh) card had the same name as older parts.

8800GT/GTS should have been called the 8900GT/GTS IMO.

Agreed.

I will however take these results with a massive bucket of salt as for a start the HD3870X2 score looks completely wrong (ie too low compare to what I have seen floating around the forums - Heck its only 2k higher than my score and I am using a dual core not a quad) which makes me question the other results.
