i would personally wear a decent white cotton shirt to an interview with a dark lightly patterned silk tie.

It's about making an impression. If I interviewed someone (something which I do from time to time) and they turned up not having made the effort in making themselves presentable, I wouldn't want them representing the company, my department or my team.

You don't really need to wear a suit though. Good luck by the way, excellent profession to get into.

depends on the area, dawwwwn sarf (or in scotland it seems) you might get away with looking a scruff but i know most local companys still expect any office staff to turn up to an interview in a suit.

I strongly agree, I'm not on about turning up in tracky b's and a tshirt :p I just wouldnt go to an interview wearing a suit anymore.
In fact, I wouldnt wear a tie, but I'd wear a jacket. Smart casual. Like Richard Branson and a whole host of others.

Fair enough, I suppose it depends on the industry you're looking into, furthermore I suppose it depends on how smart you can look in a "casual" style if you see what I mean. Not everyone can pull off a shirt and jacket with slacks. Turning up suited and booted is a bit of a tradition really, I quite like it, it can reflect your type of personality sometimes.

Anything other than suited and booted and I look homeless.

So EVERY interview has me done up to the nines...
