Microsoft has said it plans to cut the cost of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets.
Although no exact date has yet been given, Microsoft said price cuts would be introduced in 70 countries.

In the US, the cost of the most expensive version, Vista Ultimate, will be reduced to $319 (£161) from the current retail price of $399.

Analysts said Microsoft was aiming to boost the number of customers upgrading to Vista, which was introduced in 2007.

'Greater opportunities'

The price cuts apply to the packaged versions of Vista, which account for less than 10% of its sales.

By contract, 90% of Vista sales are to PC manufacturers, where the operating system is pre-installed on their computers.

"We anticipate these changes will provide greater opportunities... to sell more stand-alone copies of Windows," said Brad Brooks, a Microsoft corporate vice president.

Microsoft says it has now sold 100 million Vista licences since it was launched.

well of course they have sold 100 million Vista licenses, its sold with a PC you can get for 200 quid!!! entry level PC's have never bean so cheep.

Well.. £161 is still more than minimum average monthly wage in most countries in the world, including 9 countries in European Union. To put this in perspective - would you pay £1050 for a copy of operating system?

i work in a computer shop and we sell vista for £64.99 if they want it on a system (OEM) and people kick off when and think thats so costly!

cant understand some people because they wouldnt think twice about spending £60 per tyre for a car!

i think the price of Microsofts o/s is fine

Feel a bit cheesed off that they're doing this as I forked out the full £300 for Vista Ultimate Retail. I guess that's the price you pay for being an early adopter. :(
I fully understand what they're doing and I think they're making the right decision, but it still annoys me a little. ;)

:p Thank you for that. Early adopters like you help sort out the bugs and reduce the price for late comers like me. :D

That's why they do versions like Vista Home Basic. I do see your point though.

Alright, but would you pay £60 for a candy bar? Probably not, since you don't associate that much value with it. That is why some would balk at such a cost for an OS but not for a tire.

Strange logic you have. A car isn't going to work without a tyre, much like a computer isn't going to work without an os. A candy bar isn't required for anything.

I'd be very interested to see individual OEM vs Retail sales. I can't imagine many people are buying Retail due to the price.

It says 10% (still 10 million copies) in the article for retail version sales.

I would assume the OEM version sales are included in the 90% for new PCs, even if the OEM version isn't sold with a brand new machine.

Hopefully this will happen before the summer as that's when I hope to upgrade to Vista.

Yes but you've had about a years extra usage on it than anybody getting it now so therefore you've made use of the extra cost.

So if it costs £60 just now what kind of price will we see.

looking at £99 Vista 64bit on OC......
love to see it at £30 but that's not going to happen is it.

How much does it cost say Dell per copy when it ships machines, bet its around £30...

A price drop would sway me to pick up a copy of Ultimate if we got a price close the US translation (£161) for the retail. I currently run a PC that's not exactly cutting edge (3Ghz P4 :p), but would (and has) run Vista comfortably. It would then mean, come upgrade, I could stick Vista on the new machine without having to think about needing a 64bit version of Vista now, or whether I can move the license etc.

OcUK stock the OEM versions only. So don't expect them to change in price.

That might be very well the case but what if the full Retail Vista 64 come out in say *competitor!* for £99 and you get the OEm here for £99 what would you buy?

Penny might drop when they have a store of OS they did not have before....and everyone is asking for systems without OS. :D
