My New Pride And Joy

£10k doesnt sound too bad for a 2001 S3 - it certainly looks the part.

Haldex isn't permnant RWD is it? I'm looking closely at TT's at the moment and they seem to be FWD until Haldex detects slip. It's the same system as the S3 is it not?

The Haldex is permanent 4WD in standard guise. The TT and the S3 are essentially the same car but with different body shells. I considered a TT for a long while until I actually got in one and realised that it would be completely impracticle for my use and (this is minor) the gearstick felt too far away :p

But on the subject of the Quattro system, it may be that in standard Quattro it is normally 2WD but certainly in the case of the TT and the S3 they are permanent.

Nice. I quite like the S3, I found it gave me even more confidence to chuck into a corner than quite a few fast cars.

I was also under the impression that the haldex system used in the S3/TT was mainly FWD until slip was detected then it shifts more power to the rear?

Actually that does make it full time 4wd, just that most of the drive is at the front.

looks like a good buy

but the grey grey with some more grey and some grey flashes would drive me mad I think :p

Anything is better than silver! I got plain fed up trying to keep silver clean on my last car. As it happens, the colour is much nicer in the flesh than in the pictures. Almost has a blue hue to it in bright light :)

Very nice mate. The grey ones look great. Looks like you've got a very nice example there. All going well I'll also be the proud owner of an S3 in the next couple of weeks. We've almost got enough here now to start an OcUK club :)

Very nice, enjoy it :)

I really wanted one of these, but could not afford one at the time I bought the Rover. I think they look a bit dated now in the advent of the new S3 but with a set of S4 alloys, a slight drop and a good polish, they certainly don't look bad :)

Love the seats :)

Yes the TT/S3/R32 share the same system. They are mainly a FWD bias however when moving depending what you read 10-20% is always going to the rear. When moving its impossible in the dry to get them to spin the wheels I've giving it a good go aswell ended up smelling clutch, however pulling away hard you can spin the front wheels up a bit until it sorts itself out think its got to do that it can't start to drive the rear wheels until the prop shafting turning generates some pressure don't quote me on this though.

Its more confident than driving a RWD car when driving a S3 I had no fear of nailing it in 2nd once heading out of the corner even in the wet however compare it to say a 330i I was s***ing myself nailing it in 2nd even when the car was straight coming out the corner. Yes the 330i is the more polished handling car however point to point at speed I would rather be driving a S3 which I think would be quicker in most drivers hands.

Yeah, this is a Haldex FWD biased system.

Whats it like for road and wind noise? looking at one of these for a next car...

Wind noise is negligable and road noise is ok. That said though, the S3 is hardly subtle and you have the exhaust and engine notes to deal with primarily. Cruising down a motorway is fairly comfortable though I have yet to try it with the stereo on to give a comparison the my old Astra.
