I just bought myself a new bike.. well i hand over the cash tomorrow & pick the bike up tomorrow.

The bike has 26k miles on the clock and is on a 2000 plate it has almost a years MOT and has a few tasteful mods overall its in pretty good condition. The only problems with it i can see are a minor oil leak and the brakes aren’t to hot.

I paid £1350. Do you folks recon that price is about right?

The mods that i have spotted are

Small indicators
Twin Renegade exhaust
Lower fairings
Belly pan
Red Screen , which will be changed to black when i get it.

The bike sure has allot of grunt compared to the small inline 4 i had previously (Yamaha FZS400)

I have been buying all the service items tonight the only thing i cant seem to find online is the compressable washers for the sump plug.

Nice, yea that seems a good price for the old SV :p Have fun with it :D

One thing i loved doing with mine was putting in in 3rd, doing about 20 mph then pinning the throttle just to hear the engine roar :D nothing beats that sound of a twin.

Looks really nice, I'm glad to hear you're going to be putting a black screen on it though :p

Why not just ask what all the mods are?... you don't want to discover that it has lights underneath it.

my first bike, oh that brings back memories, where did you get it from?

just finished service yesterday on the Tuono, if you need someone to meet up near glasgow then give me an email

I live only about 12 miles from paisley (Lochwinnoch) so i might do that. If you are mechanicly i would be much obliged with some help with a few items that i will need to sort with this bike.

I am a new rider and bikes are completly new to me , my only previous bike was an import FZS400 (I only had it one month) which was a complete dog. Hopefully more lucky this time!.

Nice bike, especially for the money. Had a loan SV650 a year back and I can honestly say I could get to work quicker than larger bike. Just so nimble, nice torque for punching out of roundabouts.. tons of fun.

Yeah the torque is great, scared the **** out of me on the test ride.

added you on msn mate - i went sv650s, sv1000s then onto the tuono, i love the vtwin punch without feeling like your wringing it to within an inch of its life

nice bikes the SVs. very under rated i think. :)

brakes are crap on them - get some decent pads, braided lines and clean the pistons up etc change fluid and they'll be fine.

just keep them clean - that's the main issue with the SV's. they rust quick.

Maz - must have been a quick glance. :p

Send me an email with your msn address cheers.

I was unable to pick up the bike today, I wimped out because of the snow. I am starting to have concerns about the oil leak and my lack of technical knowledge is stopping my mind from being at rest. I have assumed that the leak was due to a weeping sump plug but now I wonder if its something more serious, I wouldn’t like to miss out on this bike for something so minor but at the same time, I don’t want an engine that’s on its way out.

Any advice on getting to the bottom of this would be appreciated

I think I know a previous owner of that bike... Not the last one but the one before. If I'm right, it's got my old lower fairings on it  Do they have a half-circle cut out of the back edge on each side?

SVs don't leak oil much, except from the right hand side, clutch cover is plastic and can sometimes warp a little. Easy fix if that's it. Otherwise it's likely to be sump plug, or possibly a crank breather hose come off. They almost never leak from the main cases... Clean it up and follow the snail trails.

Or... If you can't suss it out, give us a shout, and I'll take a look at it if you like- I'm not a pro but I know SVs passing well

Hey, check it out:

That's mine on the left as you view it, the green and silver. And I think that's yours on the far right! On the 18th hole of the old course, FORE!

Northy is the SV man! If your needing stuff done hes your best bet! Just stay in front of him rather than behind, he has a nasty habbit of falling off ;-)

Northwind,

Where are you located , i would be grateful for your assistance.

I think it does have the old fairing lowers.

I like the SV650, nice grunty engine, solid reliable, brakes felt a little uninspiring when I test rode one, but it's chuckable, but lacks a little bit of power IMO.

yea brakes are awfull on them, and yea top end is lacking, needs a big bore to 850cc really :p

My brothers recently written off one im hoping to guy back of insurers and do up for track days, get it big bored and change the front end to a gixer one for better brakes and handling :D

Just on the west side of Edinburgh... My email's in trust if you want to drop me a line. I make this offer only because I'm 9/10 convinced it'll be something simple :D

Yep, works really well, dead easy too as these things go. If you want an inexpensive upgrade for the rear end you can fit a 636 shock into a carbed SV or GSXR shock into an injected one, works fairly well. Not as good as a real shock but about 1/10 as much. But I wouldn't big bore it, some people have had it last, others don't, it's a bit of a gamble. The SV bottom end's strong enough for standard but it doesn't take big tuning, and you can get it to around 80bhp at the wheel without touching the bores- much above that and it starts getting fragile. The SV's never going to be a big power bike after all, if you want that you need something else, and that money would give big benefits on handling- so I reckon keep it sensible, if you want to tune it do it cheap with compression and cams, maybe a cheap used exhaust.

Just stay in front of him rather than behind, he has a nasty habbit of falling off ;-)

The trouble with the internet is that the truth follows you around :(
