Just Got My 3870X2

The X2 is certainly no "Leaf Blower" although at 100% it could probably produce about 5KG of thrust :D

For a ref its much quieter than the X1900XT standard white cooler in games. That had a aweful whine. At the desktop its silent.

The dynamic nature of the fan speed control only adds to the noise I suspect fixing the fan speed would help a lot.

Comment Nvidia v ATI picture quality and AA- detail in the distance, when AA is applied? I think 4X AA in Race 07 with the ATI looks better than Nvidia with number 5/6

They're all going to be the same as it is the same reference cooler.

Unfortnately ATi didn't learn a few lessons from the 2900 and still decided to slap on the leaf blower for the X2.

oh look, Tomnbk, the dual personalitied forum man. One day you hate nvidia and love ati, the next its the other way around.

My 2900xt and my current 3870x2 run silent. my 8800gtx ran silent, as did the 8800gts. my x1950pro is louder.

people just can't seem to grasp that not every card runs at the EXACT same temperature, not everyone has the case in the same room, in the same part of the world and not everyone has the same fans. I've got a TT armour + its got pretty massive yet silent airflow(at 7v on most fans anyway). the 3870x2 barely gets hot in this setup and the 100% fan noice i get on boot for 3 seconds(i still have no clue how people complain about 3 seconds of noise on boot, seen a guy not long ago saying he won't get it because start up noise is bad , wtf), not once in any game or benchmark had the fan spin up to 100%.

Can't seem to get rivatuner to make the fan run at 100% yet either.

Both Ati and nvidia will have some cards that run hotter purely because the cores aren't all perfect and identical, some will run hotter and use more power than ones from other runs. some will have less good contact with the core because theres no foolproof method. if i got 2 8800gtx's now and ran them in the same system i would, or at least could get fairly different temps.

I like both companies equally. You'll see me critisize NVIDIA just as much as ATi :). Asgard I would certainly describe it as a leaf blower, if it's anything like the 2900, this was one of my main complaints when I had my 2900.

Having owned a 2900 for about 8 months, and currently owning a 3870x2, the x2 is definately quieter than the 2900. My room is by no means cool either, having a 42" lcd and a dell 2407, quite close to my pc, they both throw out a bit of heat my x2 is pretty much silent, though i'm gonna set the fan to 45% when i get home later as it's pretty acceptable to me and there's no harm in it being cooler. But then 45% is pretty quiet compared to the noise my 2900 sometimes made, it was an annoying noise, like whiney, the x2 is more 'low impact' noise if that makes sense.

But...still the X2 still makes noise...an amount which is audible and sometimes annoying. (my 3870X2 card is noisy)

If you're looking for a silent system, this card is the wrong way to go about it lol :D

Or you wait for a quieter version to come out.
Me coming from 1900xtx/1900xt Master water-cooled have been surprised of how quiet the HIS IceQ 3870 is.

OK.

Before getting my GTX I had two X1950's running in crossfire. I only bought the GTX because the ati cards were so loud. I may have kept the X1950's if they were quieter.

The noise thing is the only thing that worries me about the X2. I'll probably see if any custom cooled variants arrive a la Diggsy and might plump for one of those as well.

Is it only GECUBE that do a 2.0 PCIe slot (at the moment).I know a lot of the release models had 2.0 on the box but was not or had it removed.?

Perhaps you should run one on your own system before commenting, my X2 runs pretty quiet even under load, I have no complaints about noise and it certainly isn't a leaf blower.

If its anything like the 2900, come on, you should know if its like the 2900 or not, as you've had a 2900, and you also had an X2 which you sent back remember. ;)

Wth tom... you never said it was like a leaf blower I'm sure you said it was not loud  ...................................

Hmm .And thanks had it in my basket from else where sometime just wanted to make sure and for the money great buy.I like the S1/flower 2 fan cooler but that will do me.

Ups looks like the older model i was/am going to buy any news on when the newer model hits the shops?

Easy tiger. I was under the impression that the X2 had the same an unit to the 2900 therefore I can understand why people would say it's loud as the 2900 was annoyingly loud but if it is as kylew says then I apologise ;)
