BMW Z4 thread

20K is good for a mint condition '04/'05 3.0i SE/Sport with a lot of options ticked. Avoid the auto box unless you're going to be sitting in traffic. This is a sports car and should be driven like one to be enjoyed.

Avoid the 2.5i or the 2.2i as the running costs are pretty much identical to the 3.0i. The 2.0i isn't even worth considering. You should be able to get a car with the full DVD satnav pack, full leather and a load of other options. They are fairly well specced as standard so there's not too much to worry about.

As for what to look for, there aren't really any common problems with these. The owners of the ragtops will be able to tell you what to look for with regards to the roof and it's operation. A full BMW service history is absolutely essential.

I'll be able to tell you more in 2 days :D:D:D:D

Or you could make me an offer on my fully loaded 3.0 SE (2003) ;)

I promise it would be less than £20K :) I have a hankering for something new!

I personally don't see the point in spending £20k on a Z4 - it wont get you a 3.0Si with the 270bhp N52 engine, so why not spend £14k on a 2003 3.0 Z4 instead - it will be exactly the same as the sort of car you'd get for £20k but... £6k cheaper and less susceptable to depreciation.

Still loving my 3.0si Sport, although I've not had a chance to drive it enough really! Was thinking of taking a week off to add a few extra bits and have a nice long drive around sometime in the future when I'm less busy.

I waited to get one with nav and the hifi option. The nav is your gateway to decent iPod adapters (such as the intravee) plus it's easy to retrofit the TV tuner option. I enjoy messing about with things like that though, so maybe not so important to you. The Z4 hifi options is REALLY good compared to anything else I've heard on the BMW forecourt although some might say that isn't difficult. ;)

The auto box is excellent, I don't plan to take the car to a track day or anything so that's fine for me. I certainly won't be going quick enough round many corners that an auto change will unsettle the car and the steptronic paddles aren't too bad anyway. I'm 34 though, the me of 10 years ago would have taken the mick out of myself for wanting an auto so again decide what is better for you. :)

Blimey thats come around quick, did you go for the piano black inside or the silver (like my car) in the end?

Decided on the matching imola red and anthracite leather dash. It was the same price as the piano black, is easier to keep clean and looks great as it matches the seats and doors. Pics soon :D

Fox has a good point. If you have £20k to spend on a Z4, save up for another wee while and pick up an Alpina S Roadster for £22-23k. This is more likely to hold it's value and is supposed to be a good improvement over the 3.0i although I cannot comment as I haven't driven one. If £20k is your max, save yourself a few quid.

Nowt wrong with the Z4, much better than the Z3 and a fun car. Not my cuppa as I never got on with the steering feel or the inside feeling, but that's just me. I think the Boxter is a better drive, but you need to get an S really to feel quick and then you are well over £20K. For the money the Z4 is a good car, though I would aim for a 3.0L or M if you can, though £20K probably wouldn't see you in an M.

Yep - good call, a low mileage 03/04 is a great suggestion

Tell me about options and upgrades on an 03 what seats ? What steering wheel ?

Saw an 06 in the dealers today and loved the piano black trim, sports seats and steering wheel..

What about sports suspension ? Tuneable ? Hard top worth it ?

Cheers for all the replys :)

Sports seats are really rare on 03/04 Z4's - I've only seen a few with them.

Sports Suspension + Runflats = nasty ride. Might be better without the runflats?

Not really, I've just seen a 53 Boxter S for £22k and there are plenty about cheaper then that.

As has been said before though I wouldn't spend that on a Z4.

Not for a 987 Boxster S, which is what I was comparing it to.
