So yeah, I participated in the multiplayer beta for Call of Duty 4 on the 360 before it was released, and didn't think the gameplay was that good. So I trolled lots of CoD4 threads in the meantime. As far as I was concerned, it was just Call of Duty 2 with modern skins.

Fast forward to two days ago, and I have the PS3 game in my hands... all I can say is wow. It is true that the gameplay stays to the tried and true Call of Duty formula, but the storytelling and characters are incredibly top-notch. I just got to the part where the US army pulls out and there's a nuclear explosion in the city just as they were leaving. The blood tinged skies from the fallout and bodies & rubble everywhere as I crawled out the helicoptor chilled me to the bone. I haven't had a game do that to me in a long time. I'm just starting the 'All ghillied up' mission now.

Long story short: great game, why didn't people rave on about the story more? All I ever heard was multiplayer, gameplay, levelling up, blablabla. The story is miles ahead of everything else.

Probably they do =in threads with "Spoiler" in the title. I guess thats ruined a large chunk of the story now....

The multiplayer is awesome imo, but it's lacking certain basic things like online split screen and proper host migration (not quite fixed even after the patch).

I really like the singleplayer game too, not too long and always fun and interesting :)

To be fair it's probably one of the best game I've played in a long time (with Halo3 and Portal(TOB) being the others).

a lot of the enjoyment depends on which level you play it on from the start. I wrongly played it through on vet from day one and the re-spawn til you get to point A destroyed the flow and story of the game for me. Playing it again slightly lower made the game story much more enjoyable and absorbing.

Go to low though and its over in 6 hours.

Its alright, mutliplayer was the meat of the game though.

I loved the single player mode challanging enough on the medium difficulty but kept me entranced the whole way through. Playing on veteran is a whole differnet thing for me, i've only managed to get to the end of 'one shot, one kill' and its been a real chore but still fun.

COD4 was one of the best single player FPS games I have played in a LOOOOOOONG time. Thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through.

I remember the part KNiVES was talking about very well, there's a few cinematic moments like that through the game. My favourite part was the bit when you are in the plane giving support to the guys on the ground :D just awesome.

Very cinematic but i felt like i was on Rails. SP must be played through but it's not free form enough for me.
MP is good but the maps are far to small, it's like fighting in a teacup. I like it for quick in your face brutality but get bored within a few rounds.

I played through it first time on the medium setting and loved it, then went through it again on veteran and loved it just as much, its much more rewarding finishing the game when it is extremely challenging.
Plus I think going through the game on vet helps to improve your skills (aiming and taking cover) for multiplayer.

I thought that this game was just so stylish - I loved the SAS stuff - they played a very large part in this game which surprised me. I'm proud to own it :D

You should have turned away the instant I said 'but the storytelling and characters are incredibly top-notch'. Sorry for the lack of spoiler tags though.

lol is that because you love it or hate it? (Marmite time)
Flamin scripted magical grenade! Sodding dogs! Damn tanks running me over! Wallhacking AI! aaaaaargh. Buggered if I'm wasting my time doing the last timed mission on vet!
