This was one of those episodes that makes a lot of people go "ah, right, so my theory is completely wrong then....", which is great! un-predictability and "OMG I MUST SEE THE NEXT EPISODE NOW!" endings are what make Lost great!
Great stuff. I have been trying to find out what that professor person has been in aswell. Came to me yesterday. He played Upham, (Jeremy Davies) in Saving Private Ryan. I like him. Good actor and seems to have his own style too.
And the guy strapped to the bed on the boat is Fisher Stevens, who played Ben in 80s awesomeness Short Circuit, and the greatest film of its era, Short Circuit 2.
Ok, I don't know if any theories like this have already been posted but I thought I'd just throw this out there as we've just been debating it in the office. What do you think? Aplogies if it's already been said.
The island is actually in 1994 and surrounded by some kind of space/time anomoly...perhaps an experiment by the Dharma Institute. The 'button' was to do with the electromagnetic field which somehow controlled this anomoly.
The realtime is 2004 (when the flight took place).
When desmond detonated the magnetic shield thingy, it ruptured the space-time continuem and crashed the plane - transporting it back to 1994 on the island.
Also, I seem to remember that in the future, they say the plane is underwater so maybe the island doesn't exist in the future as its underwater which is why no one can find it?
I like it. Unfortunately there are many many questions regarding the island that still need clearing up....
Oceanic 6?
Monster?
Polar bears everywhere?
Shark with Dharma logo?
The others and why they don't age?
The four toes on the statue?
The Submarine that takes them to the island and why that wasn't affected?
Why the mother's of the babies die?
Who Ben really is?
etc

So how did the crew from the boat get to the island?
Ok, well we think the storm they passed through on those set coordinates (to find the island as it isn't there in the future remember) is the result of the detonation and the 'rift' in the space time continuum.
So how did the crew from the boat get to the island?
Maybe, it just seems as though your theory that the plane is underwater in the future yet on the island in the past suggests that the people in the future found the plane and not the island yet the people from the boat went to the same coordinates and found the island... o_0
If I was drunk, that would confuse the hell out of me
My theory is that the numbers that are entered into the computer to discharge the electromagnetic pulse, is something to do with the constant that Daniel mentioned to Desmond. Also if you look at Daniels notes you can see the numbers.
Now when these numbers were entered, the constant reset itself meaning the world would carry on because everyone's consciousness mind would remain in the current time frame. However because these numbered were not entered and the hatch "blew up", the side affects are starting to show because this constant cannot be reset. Hence the reason why Desmond and Minkowski minds are jumping back in time. Now over time more people will feel the side affects meaning that they will die, which will lead to the end of humanity, which is why the Valenzetti Equation predicts the end of humanity.
However, you would have thought that the constant (hatch) would be better protected and have a much better plan than sticking a couple of people in there and hoping they press the buttons.
