Hi Folks,
Bought a new plasma start of year Samsung PS50P96FDX 50" Full HD 1080p
it had 2 dead pixels ( i stupidly complained and got a replacement unit)

This replacement had 3 dead pixel and one phasing one , I again complained
and the store were good enough to issue another replacement which I have justed received ......
This one also has 4 stuck pixels ( red perm on ) wtf am I cursed or do samsung appear to have a blind man doing screen quality control ?

I asked the engineer who came to check on the fault and he said they rarely
have issues with samsung's and dead pixels.

Am I unlucky in getting 3 different sets with dead pixels or is it normal to have non working pixels on most plasma's.

Does any plasma owner (doesnt have to be samsung ) care to comment on their sets and dead pixels ?

The shop now offer to give me a refund , should I take my money and run ?

If I do can someone recommend a decent 50" 1080p plasma for about 1500 -1700 ?

Thanks

a plasma with dead pixels. i thought these were like rocking horse poo

and you got 3 sets in a row with them ? my god man get yourself a 4 leaf clover.

Plasmas don't have pixels AFAIK, they use little lamps and this is the first time I hear of anyone having such an issue with a plasma screen. Change the brand, my two Panasonic palsmas are gems...

Calling Plasma cells "lamps" is a bit of a stretch even to a layman. Plasma cells have a phosphor coating on one side, and are filled with a high energy plasma. When power is applied to the plasma the energy excites the phosphor causing it to glow.

Each of the plasma cells is individually controlled by a transistor, which is embedded into the panel. Just as with LCD screens, its possible for a transistor to be faulty, causing a cell to be either always on, or always off. As they are embedded into the glass panel, its not possible to repair them after the panel is initially tested. Of course different manufacturers will have different fault tolerances. I've yet to notice a dead pixel on a panny plasma.

I would highly recommend a Panasonic TH50PZ700, and you should easily get that within your budget. Its an awesome TV.

Thanks for the replys gentlemen

I am now considering getting a Panasonic TH50PZ700 ( + buying a stand for it as well - weird it doesnt come as standard ?)

I keep reading horror stories on forums to do with purple snakes etc on
panasonics so I am a little wary.

Any other recommendations ?

Well after some whining on my part
The shop agreed to give me another new one
This one only has 1 dead red pixel (perm on) , so I am gonna accept it.

So thats 4 different units each with a fault , so much for quality control at our
friends at samsung.

The TV does actually come in 3 different versions, depending on if you want no stand, a pedastal mount, or a full stand. The no stand is for people who want to use a wall mount. I got the Pedastal mount thrown in for free when I got my TV.

I think the purple snakes were limited to the THxxPX60/600 range (9th gen panels). The 10th gen 70/700 series should be unaffected. Anyway the purple snake issue was overrated, I have a PX60 and it does get the snake, but to be honest, most movies your lucky if you see one, even when you do get it, its normally limited to a few seconds here and there. So unless you enjoy searching for the snakes, and then pausing to "moan" about them its not a huge issue.

In my current DVD collection, I would say Startrek The Next Generation has the most snakes, due to the cream & grey backgrounds in the ship, but even so, its not often a problem.

The 700's are great, do yourself a favour and get one :)
