Few N95 Questions (just got one)

So I now have an N95 8GB sitting on my desk here at work. First thing I will say I can never easily get to the videos, or find the functions I want. Feels like a fantastic phone and capable of so much yet the implementation seems a little lacking. Only certain menus (and there seem to be so many) have the right options :(

You'd think they'd stick the likely to be used functions right at the top. No offence to 3G, but I couldn't give two hoots about 3's music store unless I feel 'desperate' to get a track.

I know it's got 8gb, but no memory expansion (i.e. easily transference slot) what a PITA :( )

Anyway... Questions

1) Which parts of the GPS stuff and Nokia Maps is free? It mentions in google maps about using the network and too me that puts up a huge "expensive" warning flag.
2) How the heck can I 'easily' get to the music and video's just using the music keys revealed by the slider? They randomly seem to open music player/play a tune / open video or nothing.
3) I have firmware version V 11.0.026 is it worth upgrading?
4) It has frozen twice since i've been playing with it (since last night). Is that normal when just browsing menus?
5) What do I need to avoid if I don't want to get any unexpected bills?
6) I might use Skype but have never done it before, it says free skype on the website, so within UK, is that correct (With Three Mobile in case not seen above).
7) That web connection/MSN Messenger and ebay etc, is real tempting but worried about the costs. I ironically got this phone to save money on my contract as I was paying £30 a month, but now paying only £18 a month for the same thing. Anyone know which of those features are free or at least very cheap to use?

Thanks for any help and it is greatfully received, this is the most advanced phone I've ever owned even though I'm a softy developer lol. I kinda just thought "heck, why not!" and went for it lol.

EDIT: Also just realised it doesn't charge from the USB cable. [SARCASM]Now that is sheer brilliance [/SARCASM]. Means I have to buy another Nokia phone charger and carry that around rather than using a generic and much smaller usb cable :(

1. A-GPS is what ups network usage, it uses the network to send a few packets of data to help location with the internal GPS, cuts my location find down to less than 30 secs which is useful.
(On a phone like this it is useful to have a data package anyways to get the most out of it)
2.The music keys carry on playing what was last played like any normal MP3 player, quite simple.
3. Yes definitely worth upgrading, makes quite a few changes, you will have to change your product code to EURO1 and then use NUS to update.
4. Mine has never frozen, but is de-branded and upgraded, that could be 3's firmware doing that.
5. Using the internet or emails or you tube etc.... if you dont have a data package.
6. You can use a client called Fring to use skype on the n95 , but again it helps if you have a data package.
7. I believe on 3 msn/ebay and the likes are free to use and part of your contract, if you can, get the X-series thing for 1gb mobile internet for £5.

The fone should also come with a charger as it is not a generic nokia one, it has a smaller connector and may require a converting connector if you want to use the normal ones

Hope that helps, the phone takes time to set up and get used to but once you have installed all the right programs and set the menus up how you want its a joy to use :)

Not quite sure what you mean by not a generic charger. All Nokia phones have exactly the same size connector and can take any of the chargers. It's been like this for years now.

To the OP, why don't you just reorganise the menu icons so that all the important things to you are at the top?

I figured you could do that Mark, just hadn't figured out how yet lol.

Thanks for your help, but this thread is probably defunct if you check my other thread about 3G attempting to steal money from me for a contract I never agreed to. So will be exchanging the phone it seems.

I meant exactly what I said, the charger is different to the generic Nokia one, for the N95.

It doesn't matter what the end that plugs into the electrical socket looks like. Nokia do do a number of different chargers that have different appearances at the plug end. But they all use the same connector that goes into the phone, and that's all that matters.

no it doesnt, the NEW jack that goes into the phone is a tiny thinner version of the old version

This "new" jack has been around for 2 years now, so it's not really new or non-standard! This is why I was very confused by the phrase 'non-standard' in relation to a Nokia charger!

Its non-standard in the way that most other nokia phones, hence the standard nokia phone, use the normal jack where as the N95 uses a mini jack.

1) GPS itself is free, but obviously any data usage (such as using A-GPS or loading maps on the fly) will incurr a charge if you don't have a data plan. In the Nokia maps application, mapping is free, but voice navigation requires an extra charge.
2) Press and hold the diamond-shaped key to the right of the directional buttons.
3) Definitely. Look up a 'debranding' guide.
4) I get occasional lock-ups on the vanilla N95, but that's always due to funky third-party apps. The menus etc are rock solid.
5) Making any calls, texts, MMS, or data use :) You can check your bill (including current spend) on Three's website.
6) It's free if you use Three's Skype client (for 1000mins iirc).
7) I'd strongly recommend you get X Series silver. The phone is such a good internet device, you are missing out on a lot of potential if you don't get it. MSN, Skype and, I think, eBay are free regardless.

It sounds to me that you just have a bunch of old Nokia phone chargers... i.e., the old standard. The new standard charger, which has actually been around for nearly 3 years now when I looked again, is not non-standard, it's the new standard, and has been for a long time now. Therefore, the N95 takes the standard Nokia charger, as it has been the standard for almost three years now. If it took the old style fat connector, that would be non-standard, because those chargers were phased out years ago.

Thankyou for all the info gentlemen :) I may end up getting another but in no way am I likely to get it from 3.

Not so. The still available Nokia 2310 uses the fat connector style charger.

Don't forget that phone was announced 2 years ago now and is one of the last few models that still has the old style charger. The point I'm trying to make is that the smaller connector is now the standard Nokia charger. It's not non-standard at all.
