Hey all, just typing this as i'm not really sure what to do right now..

My Great Aunt is 89, 90 in July, and has Artheritis which is in her lower back, making walking very hard (1 or 2 sticks, or a walker required) and her hands are not very strong at all, she struggles to grip many things.

Well today, things just got 10x worse :( She was in her flat in the retirement home she's in, got up from her chair, went to turn on the TV, turned it on, turned around to go back to her chair, and must have lost her balance, from what we can see she fell back and to the right, hitting the back of her head on the door, falling down, damaging her wrist, and, unbeknown to us until later, breaking her hip :( She must have knocked herself silly and struggled over to the phone, which was, as she said about 50 minutes (and 2 metres, if that) so I can only imagine the pain she was in when I heard her on the phone saying "Can you come over please? I've had a fall, I think i've broken my hip" to which I went into panic mode and my Mum and I rushed over there, to see and help her, when we got there she'd dragged herself to the window/phone area and called us, and was laying propped up in the corner, she was able to move her toes and fingers etc.. but a horrible sight to see someone you love in such agony :(

I rushed and called a paramedic, who got an ambulance sorted and after oxygen, morphene etc.. got her loaded in the ambulance and moved to the Infirmary, that was about 6pm!

Just had a call from my parents, who have been there for 5 hours now, saying she's had stitches where she cut and bust her head open, her wrist is ok, the fall and her Artheritis in it made it swell and appear broken, but not, thankfully, but alas her hip is broken, and she'll need a partial replacement. I really have no idea how long she'll be out of comission for, or where she'll have to go (back to retirement home, or into care?) when she is released from hospital, I know she'll panic as her best friend at her flats had a hip replacement last year, which caused a heart attack that killed her, and she only lost her sister (My Grab) last January.

A thousand thoughts are running through my mind right now, and I have no idea how long she'll be spending in the hospital, many weeks i'm sure, but can anyone with any knowlege here spread any help? I would just go and google it, but they say it helps to talk about things, too.

Thanks!

Hope you get better soon Auntie Rose :(

A normal hip op and they have you up and walking the next day, this being an actual break may be different..

However, we're not allowed medical threads on here. I'm sure the doctors involved with your Aunt can point you in the right direction.

Good luck

Only if you're lucky/have a very simple one.

As for the op, sorry to hear about your nan :(
I suspect she'll be off her feet for a while (several weeks mnimum) :(

ok, I'll re word that..

If you have a replacement hip fitted, they will have you walking the next day.
No bending over with your leg at 90 degrees for 5 weeks though in case it pops out :o

Thanks guys, she's always been in good "internal" health, but today they said she has a heart murmur and weak heart valve too, which could possibly indicate some kind of minor heart attack, but this is all going on assumption. They'll be eveluating her over the next 48 hours to see if she'll be ok to undergo a partial hip replacement op, all being well, hospital release to a more local (Town not city) might be 2-3 weeks, and from there, god only knows, could be mid-may and then she may have to leave the retirement home for sheltered accomodation (And only last week she was saying how she didn't want to ever go into that!)

Things are right up in the air right now, so the enxt 48 hours will decide if she can have the op, or if its too worrying she could be bedridden and in a lot of constant pain :(

Oh and its my Aunt (nan's sis) :D

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry to hear what's happened. All the best to your great aunt. She's likely to be off her feet for a while following a broken hip, depending upon how major the hip reconstruction is. They'll also want to investigate her heart murmur with an echocardiogram. I'd try not to think about a heart attack (easier said than done) - many people have problems with their valves as they get older and a murmur doesn't necessarily signal a major problem.

So sorry about your Aunt, however she could well be fine when she comes out or perhaps go into sheltered housing.
My Nan who is 102 next month had a fall in november and is now in bed full time, however she has recovered and I think that if she didn't live at home with my aunt the nurses or care staff would have her out of bed and walking around again. She was very fit and healthy before her fall.

1)Listen and follow the medical teams instruction when in hospital. Especially the physios!

2)When she is "medically fit" to be discharged by the team, bend over backwards to ensure she leaves the hospital ASAP. Try not to have any delays in getting her home. Reason being, you dont want to be in hospital a day longer than you have to. The most common reason people dont get discharged promptly is due to the home circumstances or lack of social support (perceived or otherwise). Hence your family must do their best to ensure she gets home asap. Hospital is a dangerous place for a 90 year old.

Just a quick update for you all :)

She spent last Thursday & Friday in hospital in what was a pretty drowsy state, mostly from shock I believe, had a good weekend, getting better and more like herself again, Monday & Tuesday she had a lot of imaginary things going on, nurses being against her, animals in the ward etc.. Even giving one of the nurses the finger! But apparently down to the mix of new environment and the drugs they had her on, but she showed to be back to her "normal self" or as normal as you can get after a week in a bed with a shattered half hip, and she underwent an operation to replace the shattered half of her hip this evening, which by all accounts (Could only call due to it being late) was a success, the operation went as well as it could, and she's resting in bed on medication for the pain, stress etc..

So things are looking up, I hope, one of our massive worries was her not making it through the operation, but she has, and I just hope & pray she makes as speedy a recovery as she can! :)

I'm so relieved!
