Nvidia Forceware BETA drivers in vista x64

Hi Guys,

The missus is complaining of crashing when playing the Sims 2 (although Bioshock appears fine). Upon investigation Nvidia released a beta on the nzone.com website to combat some crashing on this game. I have a Leadtek 8800 GT.

The beta drivers are unsigned and I beleive Vista will refuse to install them even though the Nzone page shows that it is for Vista 64.

Does anyone know how I can install these drivers?

Also, in device manger I can see that there are 2 drivers availble for this card and both have numbers after the name defining a version number. Its in the format of something like 7.2.3.1 however the actual forceware version is 169.62. How can I determine which version of the driver is installed by the new forceware?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried installing these beta drivers?

I use beta's all the time (cant remember last official set I had!), and Vista just asks if you want to install even though not signed. Click yes!

Also, my 174.12's show up as 7.15.11.7412, for my device driver.

I did try an unsigned driver (not for the graphics card) and vista just rejected it. I though i found a workaround by manually telling it what driver to use but wasnt sure if it was using that or whether it decided to override my choice.
Where did you get version 174.12?The latest beta I can find is 169.28 which is from the Nvidia website?

Incidentally, I am running x64 version.

Ahh right. I'll perhaps give them a go and see how I get on.

I read somewhere that you can press F8 on boot and one of the options is to boot int o unsigned mode or something. I havent tried that as yet.

Not tried that myself, never needed to though. Good luck mate!

You don't generally need to disable driver signing for Nvidia drivers.

I believe that I am right in thinking that drivers can be signed but not WHQL, because signing simply means that they come from a certified provider. Vista driver signing on x64 is more of an attempt to ensure that the drivers come from a reputable source rather than to certify that the driver is actually any good (which is WHQL's job) because drivers have deeper system access and could circumvent some (not all) of Vista's system security. nVidia have a driver signing license so anything they release (beta or not) should be covered. I could be wrong though.
