Either Diesel or Petrol.

I guess that Diesel cars will win hands down. I have started a new job and its a 100 mile round trip to work and back. Currently I drive a 306 XSi 2.0L.

This likes to drink the petrol a lot.

Budget of up to £10,000.

Ideally, I would like to pay as little Tax as possible.

I'm sure people will shoot down this idea and state that it's unsuitable for doing 100 miles a day, but have you considered a Yaris D-4D?

I've had one for the last 5 years (from new) and for the first 2 years I was doing a 70 mile round trip commute, mainly on the motorway. It's surprisingly comfortable, very quiet at 70 (or 80 or 90) and I average 50mpg. Better can be achieved by sticking to 70 (or keeping it standard..mines chipped!)

Tax is £35/year, it's a group 3/4 car so insurance is dirt cheap (I pay just over £200/year fully comp, 28 with 7 years NCB, but in a not-so-great postcode) and you can join Club Toyota for £55/year which gives you the full RAC membership worth around £250. Any other cars in your household also qualify for half-price RAC membership.

People may discount it because it's a small car but there's actually a lot of room inside and it's a very composed car with very low running costs.

100 mile round trip really isnt that bad if mostly motorway. Im doing 140 round trip and spending about £300 a month. Not worth spending £10k on a car to save money on car tax really :p

The VW Polo Bluemotion gives 72MPG I think and is regarded as the most eco car at the moment.

It's also a decent little motor, and some have claimed up to 78MPG when tweaked. Its a £35 tax band I think.

But it is £11,500 from what I remember

9pence a mile...that really is good.

my old mondy got about 11.5-12pence a mile. this new one seems less (estate). but i have had a couple of bad traffic runs. 2 hours to 30miles the other day. burns off a fair whack I imagine.

expecting 450miles to 55-60quid though. so @ the op: if you get around 30-35MPG petrol the offset against higher diesel price is negligable.

I worked out IF I could get 45mpg diesel i would save 200quid a year max over a 20k per year commute.

in a V6 of course I also calculated I would loose £1000 per year over the petrol!

edit:
i also noted a 30quid difference in road tax between my P reg "l 16v mondeo, and my newer 2001 2L 16v mondeo. 205quid for a year on this new one. rip off!

Run the 306 into the ground, then replace it.

If your job/money is the only reason to repalce your current car, it'd probably be cheaper to do it that way.

If you also want a new car, then that's different :)

really?
why was my old mondeo (renewal end of feb) only 185/190 or whatever then?

bizzare system.
goto play the game though I suppose. and still seems to get 30mpg full of drums so not that fussed really :)

because mine puts out more emissions than yours :p

Cheapest by far is just to use your 306 until it dies, which could be a long time. Even if it does 30mpg vs. 48mpg you can never recoup a £10k outlay.

Given your 306 has probably done most of its depreciating this is the best option if you like the car.

Audi A3/ VW Golf 1.9TDI would be worth a look, sluggish but can pick them up for that price. Also the 2.0 TDI is worth a look.

Except Fifth Gear tested it on a normal drive and only got 47mpg out of it. Waste of time, rubbish and expensive car to try and make you look green.

get a mint golf mk4 pd130 for £8500

serisouly, the older 90/110 bhp golf diesels are very ecomonical but i don't think they're in a cheap tax bracket

plus the fact you sure as hell aren't going to want to do a 100 miles a day in a VW Polo.. :\

100 miles a day in a polo stuff that, i do 20 miles a day and wouldn't do it in out smaller then a mondeo, infact im already after something bigger and more comfortable
