Lens for photographing fish?

My father is an avid carp fisherman and would like a lens that will lend itself to photographing the fish he has caught (portrait style with him holding the fish).

He currently has a Canon 350D with what I imagine to be the kit lens. The photos will be taken from a tripod with an infrared remote.

Any suggestions on a lens which will suit this?

I would just get the 50mm f/1.8, great lenses and only £50.

the 24-105 is F/4

But still a cracking lens
