Happened today around 2:00 on the A66.

We were both driving to our other office in Redcar travelling down said road when he goes to overtake a bus. Coming onto the road was a huge truck with a full load of dirt. The bus decides to signal and pull out to overtake just as my mate is right beside him. My mate puts his footdown to get past the bus when the bus smashes right into him, spins him around like a ragdoll and the bus also collides with the truck which knocks the back wall off and spills dirt all over the road. I was right behind him and saw everything.

I have never seen anything like it in real life (only on police chase programs) and am still in shock now.

My mate was fine. Hurt his shoulder but is physically fine, obviously in some serious shock.

When it happened i pulled over to the side of the road and rang 999 and ran over to his car expecting him to be knocked out but gladly he was ok. Only 1 woman was hurt on the bus as far as I know.

My mate and myself gave our statements and it should be an open and shut case. Plenty of witnesses on the bus too.

What I want to know is.. what is going to happen to the bus driver?

He should not be on the road when you don't check your blind spot and risking tens of lives! Hopefully he'll lose his job.

Unfortunatley I didn't get any pictures. But as I work for a solictors, i'll get hold of the police photos as we are dealing with the case ourselves! :)

So when i get them, i'll put them up.

His car was an 04 Octavia vRS btw.. should have been quicker than it was getting past that bus! ;)

how big is the bus blind spot? the bus driver may have checked the mirrors but might not have bothered with his blind spot!

either way, he will hopefully loose his job, outcome could have been worse!

Bus drovers in my area seem to be getting quite brave.

I do have sympathy for the logistics of getting round in a bus but they don't half leave it to the last minute to decide to swing out onto my side of the road then leaving a junction etc.

A lot of them I anticipate they're going to make such a manouvre as there is sufficient gap and I slow/stop to allow them enough room but a lot of the time they just go for it willy nilly and leave you to pick up the pieces.

At least your friend is ok and will think twice about taking on a bus. Maybe slowing down may have been a better reaction.

Definatley. The whole front of the car was destroyed and the passenger side was smashed in.... because we were going to the same place, at the same time, I could have been a passsenger.

Or I could have been driving ahead of him and it could have been me under a bus!

Still crapping myself now!

When my mate decided to overtake the bus had no intention of pulling out. And as it's a 50mph limit he was overtaking slowly. He was there for a good while, enough time for the driver to spot him in his mirror!

PSV licence should = very safe driver, but everyone makes mistakes and it dosnt sound like he was reckless just made a mistake and had knowere to go.

Bus drivers getting brave is an understatement.

In Bristol they drive on a wave of aggression. Up onto the kerbs to get by, charging forcefully into traffic when the bus lane filters out. They double up here too so one will block two lanes so the one in-front can stop and let people on/off then get back into the traffic.

They are a bloody menace tbh.

Damn that sounds nasty. If they are anything like bus drivers around me they just indicate and just think that gives them instant right of way to swap lanes, etc even if you're right next to them. "My indicator is on MOVE OUTTA THE WAY *****!". Doesn't matter if you have no where to go.

If you feel the need to swear, star it all out

Gilly

well unfortunatly that is the way they have to be SOMETIMES, if they didnt force there way into traffic they'd just sit there all day, becuase of the vast majority of other ingnorant selfish drivers, you have to remember that they have timetables to keep to.
i work for a bus company(i'm not a bus driver) and i have a fair understanding of how it feels to be on the other side, but its fair to say there are a lot of bus drivers that do pull out without looking, its a case of look left to make sure doors are shut, indicate and start moving and THEN check the mirrors.

Buses, coaches and trams. Give priority to these vehicles when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops. Look out for people getting off a bus or tram and crossing the road.

unfortunatly some drivers seem to take this section of the highway code and think it means they own the road, unfortunatly this gives bus drivers a bad name.

fortunatly the bus drivers at the depot i work at seem to be rather sensible, well most of them anyway.:p

Ouch sounds nasty.

A bus nearly took me out the other week, although at low speeds. 2 lanes were turning into one for road works, and he just pulled into my lane while I was in it. Had to break hard to miss him.

I don't think they have mirrors just a little sign where the mirror should be saying "Pull Out Now!"

Wierdly enough I narrowly missed being sideswiped by a bus this morning. It was early so I guess the idiot might have assumed there was no oncomming traffic as he merrily pulled out of his side road into my path, both he and I had to slam on our brakes to avoid a collision. As I drove of trying best not to mouth obsceneties he gave a jaunty little wave which was as much an appology as it would have been if he'd dropped his pants and mooned me.

Completely disagree in Bristol TBH. Certainly the buses I have seen around the centre don't do that.

those damn Czech slowmobiles :p

all this must have happened in an instant if a damn vRS couldnt get pass a bus lol.

im assuming he didnt see the dirt lorry pull out before overtaking?
