MILLIONS face water rationing!!!!!!

They should build a national water grid. The south subsidises the north a lot so we should be able to take their surplus water when we have a shortage!

Probably a simpler solution would just be to become more efficient with its usage though - saves energy too.

Not really. I expect those paid to do the planning/building to solve any issues such as these, either by improving the infrastructure (not just water, but road, electricity, sewerage etc ...) as necessary or ensuring that the houses don't need any improvements in the infrastructure (self sufficient housing built near suitable water sources, sufficient public transport provision, wind/solar powered, "off-grid" waste treatment) - this has been and is regularly achievement in countries throughout the world - I expect Britain to be no different.

I expect Gordan Brown to ensure that, whoever he charges with the responsibility of ensuring that happens ( ... and so on down the chain) - and will hold him and his government suitably accountable - they fail to deliver, they can no expect my vote in the next election.

They deliver on this and succeed in meeting the other challenges and opportunities the nation faces during their term, provide a suitable manifesto, representing my views, opinions and beliefs - identifying what they intend to do to improve the nation during the upcoming term, then they can expect my vote in the next election.

At the moment, they have failed dismally - they have a relatively short time to regain my trust, support and commitment.

Factor in the 3 million new homes that Gordon Brown is building across some of the most densely populated areas and there may well be a problem in the future.

I agree. The number of people who obsess about ensuring their car (and frequently, multiple cars now) are cleaned on a weekly basis is simply amazing. I would far rather a dirty car and drinking water, than a clean car and restricted drinking water - some people need a reality check. When it rains, your car gets cleaned - having a shiny car does not impress me nor most of the people who see it.

At the most, you should clean your car once every 2 months or so, if it hasn't rained - if you think about the fact that everytime you clean your car, you are effectively increasing the cost of the next refuel for it (because the finite energy used to provide the water in to your hosepipe, has increased the cost of energy), most people would probably reconsider if the clean was necessary.

Probably a simpler solution would just be to become more efficient with its usage though - saves energy too.

I used to think that ... then I looked into the cost of desalinisation and realised it'll be a hell of a long time before the fresh water supply is sufficiently limited (and sufficiently expensive) to make it an economically viable process - we would pretty much need to be left with only enough fresh water to drink before it was cost-effective.

We must be the only island in the world that has droughts.

Thats a continent though.

It's also an island. The world's only island continent. :)

Not a tiny country a couple of hundred miles wide, where no point is more than ~100 miles away from seawater and the country is always raining.

You can still have droughts in a wet country. "Drought" doesn't always mean "herds of cattle dying in their thousands while farmers sob into dirty handkerchiefs and wring them out into the kettle for an afternoon cuppa".

Where do you think water comes from. :p

Maybe? :p

we live on an island so why not pump some of the water around us, clean it & problem solved, ok the shareholders don't get such large payouts, but I know what i'd prefer more water over more money any day

I don't think people in Scotland would put up with rationing, considering we have more than enough water for our own use. You lot can be manky. :p

Same reasons I doubt water meters would come north of the border, water is another natural resource Scotland seems blessed with.
