Thought this was quite amusing:

"According to a recent report, human beings are becoming so incredibly stupid that they require cushioned lamppost bases so that when they run into them they don't mess up their idiotic faces. Apparently, a study in the UK found that one in ten people actually managed to hurt themselves by walking into a post while peering down at their mobile phone screen. The mishaps -- called "walking and texting" injuries -- have spurred the charity Living Streets to launch the padded-post-pilot scheme in Brick Lane, London. It seems that if all goes well, there are plans to roll out the idiot-proof system in Birmingam, Manchester, and Stupidton."

Slightly off topic, but can anyone remember the name of the french street stuntman who would run into lamp posts and trip over park benches?

Maybe they should get him to test those flimsy looking pads...(which don't cover all of the posts, bump into that part and put in a claim against the "wrap everyone in cotton wool" campaigners...job done.)

I have done this twice.... once while looking at a police car and once while texting and walking the dog in the dark. Very painful, but more humiliating than painful. :(

Wasn't there an advert for a car that had two guys attaching padding to a lamppost?

Just that it's what the story reminded me of. :D

yeah, was a tv ad of guys doing that cos the lamppost was next to a VW polo billboard. genius

I would much rather they just wired the outside of the lamp posts up to a few thousand volts to give people a shock.
It might teach them that watching where you're walking is generally a better idea than watching the the mobile phone all the time (many people seem to think that answering their mobile is so much more important than looking where they are going when they step into the road...). If nothing else it might stop them doing it again, at least until they've replaced the now fried mobile:p

Bring back common sense, natural selection and capitol punishment for those who are too stupid to follow the green cross code when their gadgets still have a charge.
