Did a few searches and couldn't find anyone else had posted it but:

Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics, has revealed that the Japanese electronics maker is in talks with Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray Disc drive for the Xbox 360. The Financial Times reports:

But after Sony’s victory last month in the high-definition DVD format war, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said the two sides were now talking about Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.

A Blu-ray drive in a 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with the PS3, but it would also mean extra revenues for Sony’s electronics division. It would also add further cost to the 360, meaning a premium edition of the console could be necessary.

Update

A Microsoft spokesperson provided the following comment in regards to this article:

"We have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

Nothing concrete but it looks good.

The Financial Times is reporting today that Stan Glasgow, President of Sony Electronics, has stated that there have been discussions with Microsoft to incorporate a Blu-ray drive into the Xbox 360. After the death of HD-DVD Microsoft announced that they would be discontinuing the HD-DVD add-on, leading on to discussions between Microsoft and Sony regarding the possibilities of a Blu-ray add-on, or even a fully integrated drive for future SKUs. The result of this would be an increased price point for the Xbox 360, along with a portion of all hardware revenue going to Sony. Yes, that means Sony would be making money off of every 360 and PS3 sold.

Of course, Microsoft are being coy about this entire thing, stating that they have "made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available." Nothing new there, then. Nothing's confirmed yet, but we're intrigued to see where (if anywhere) these talks will lead.

lol

I'd be happy to buy a blu-ray player for my 360 if one became available. I'd be a bit annoyed though if it was built-in to new 360's though.

Even without the update my thoughts would be: These are the same sort of talks that Sony's had with Apple? Remind me how many macbooks have bluray drives? I'm not saying that there will never be a bluray add-on for xboxes, just that this news, in itself, is meaningless.

The MS update was very carefully worded though. "We have made no such announcement" is true as they haven't announced anything yet, but it's not saying they are not in discussions with Sony.

They don't want to close off any options, standard procedure in these situations and it really doesn't tell us much.

I'm hoping to get a blu-ray player for my laptop as soon as prices tumble, not really interested in one for the 360.

Can't see games needing more storage than DVD offers for some time, Crysis install is 6.7 gigs (dual layer dvd is 8.5 gigs) and crysis is technically miles ahead of anything the 360 or ps3 will ever be able to handle. The 360 hddvd drive will be shuffled out of sight quietly and 360 will be all about the games. Also if you care about sony's licencing revenue you need to get a life quite frankly.

Crysis is 12 gig installed.

says 6.7 here

Anyway dvd is big enough for console games this gen. IMO, but still think so.
