EVGA 8800GT Superclocked - how to overclock

I got this card and started to play Crysis (ace!).

I read that it has high potential for overclocking. How do i overclock? I.e. Find the best frequencies without it crashing... :)

I downloaded Riva Tuner but i don't see a "test" section.

Plenty of posts of how to use Rivatuner if you do a wee search :D

To simplify the process, you basically need to adjust clock settings in Rivatuner by small increments and test using something like 3Dmark06 or ATI Tool. Personally, I use 3DM06.

I start with Core, then Memory and then shader clocks. Find the point where the card starts to balk (you'll see artifacting or similar when running the benchmark) then return to safe level and move to next clock. Then, find a balance between all three that works with no articfacting and produces safe temps. Finally, I always pull the clocks down a fraction to be safe.

Best to monitor temps etc using RT hardware monitor throughout the process.

Good luck, it's dead easy.

When should i get worried with the temperature? It sits 54 idle.
 
3d mark testing is useless, on mine it's table at 700/900 in 3dmark, but crashes in Crysis and Race 07. According to riva tuner my GT is idling at 25-30 degrees..hmm
 
Sorry to hijack slightly but do you have to have rivatuner running for the overclock to happen? I notice theres a checkbox saying overclock from windows startup.

3d mark. But it doesn't seem that great for stressing the card, like I said a higher overclock in 3dmark works, but crashes in crysis.

Seems my ATI was more stable..once set it doesn't crash..this 8800gt seems a bit picky.

No. It will load the OC at start-up if you ask it to.

I prefer to have OC profiles launched from the task bar with stock clocks at start-up.

Is there any way to automate this process at all when starting a game? I've tried playing about with having higher clocks kicking in when the temperature reaches a certain level and have also tried following a guide which showed this being done with the cores hitting a certain threshold (although this didn’t make much sense to me).

The latter didn’t work at all and the former seems to crash games once the overclock kicks in?

If I just leave it overclocked all the time it's perfectly stable, but obviously a bit of a waste when web browsing etc!
 
54 idle is quite warm. If you're planning on OC'ing much, then it might be worth considering an aftermarket cooler.

I have 2 8800GT's in SLI (Zotac @ 660/900), one with the stock cooler and one with a Zalman VF900-CU. The one with the stock cooler idles around 47, the Zalman idles at 35.

Should have another Zalman arriving today for the other card.
 
riva tuner has 2d, 2d low power and 3d modes...so just switch to 3d mode, set your oc there, leaving 2d modes alon.

That was the first thing I tried, but every time I change one the other changes with it! Isn't there an incompatibility with the latest forceware drivers and the latest rivatuner or something that means 2d and 3d are linked?
 
i had a 6800GT with an artic cooler and at idle it was 50 odd too. I thought that's a suitable temp?

It is, but GPU's get toasty when OC'd and under load so the lower you can get your idle temp, the more room it should leave you to stress the GPU without getting close to dangerous temps, in theory.

I know you can threshold fan profiles, but not sure about loading profiles when running exe's.

IME, changing clock settings whilst in game just causes issues. Find a good OC that's stable for what you do and stick to it. You can play around when benchmarking to make sure your e-willy is slightly bigger than the next persons :D
