Tories plan huge tax hike on booze :-(

I think it's a good idea. I blame the alcopop for much of the problem. Sure kids drank beer when I was under 18 but not many actually liked the taste.

Binge drinking in women has also massively increased in the sale of drinks that just taste like fruit juice.

I thought it was great when first alcoholic lemonades hit these shores two dogs wasn't it and another I can't remember. Since then it's been downhill.

so what your saying is put up the price on strong ale, and alcopops, because some people see chavs or any young person drinking them, and then putting the tax down so that you can buy a can of carling for 12p?

Put the price up on strong ale and cider because it contains more than X units of alcohol per serving. Put the price up on alcopops because they are a kids alcoholic drink and so they need to be priced out of the reach of kids.

They are also calling for the Tax on spirits to be unfrozen and brought back up in line with inflation, hello an extra £5 a bottle, no ta.

Yet again they bring tax as a solution to curb the peoples use, it doesn’t work for cigarettes and getting people to stop, it doesn’t work for fuel and getting people to use public transport and it won't work for this. If people want it, they will have it go without on other things. It's jut the governments way of spinning the story to make it look like the perfect solution to a deep routed problem in British society towards alcohol.

It's quite amusing to think what would happen if everyone stopped drinking and smoking...have to bleed us from something else, perhaps petrol @ £15 a gallon?

I dunno, without cigs and alcohol they'd save a helluva lot of money on policing and the NHS.

But that won't solve it will it? Tripling the tax will not suddenly make it unaffordable for them to purchase it, it will sting, and cost them maybe a bottle less a night, but it will also sting the rest of the population purchasing some cans and a bottle of wine.

And you have to remember this is a minority problem here, the government shunning the masses to put less work into solving the minority’s problem.

couldn't have put that any better for trying. Nice one.

Buy increasing taxes, student's will have less disponsable income... clubs already charge loads to get in and I am already paying about £4.50 for a "alchopop" VK drink in Oxford..

You thoughts please :)

You're getting mugged paying that much. There's my thoughts.

Cigarettes, no the damage has been done. If the vast majority of the population stopped smoking, the country piles onto public transport in the masses and we cut down on drinking the country would fall flat on its face.

The bill for the NHS is going to be there for many years as the damage has been done, they need a fine balance of people stopping smoking.

As a non-drinker, I couldnt care less. :)
Then why post :s
I think its a stupid idea, wouldnt stop the likes of students drinking, theyd either get more in debt buying over priced alcohol or start brewing there own !

And i agree, its 25+ year old people that tend to start the fights. On student days theres far less problems than at the weekend.

No it won't solve it, I don't think there is a single solution, we're talking mitigation here.

I don't think it will affect the rest of the population - non-super strength beer and wine isn't affected by the proposed tax rises and I don't think the majority of the population drink alcopops or special brew.

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

no they'd just buy more of the weaker cheaper beer, of which a couple of dozen brands of which would appear.

This isn't the answer... they need to increase the drinking age and make it harder to buy alcohol under the age limit in order to filter down to more mature drinkers.

However, there isn't really a solution for this, because you will get alcholol related violence/dispruption as long as people drink, despite the majority being under 30 years olds causing the issues.

I work in a local high street supermarket chain and we sell these alchopop's.

Increasing the price WOULD help, but it wouldn't curb the problem.

Making it harder to buy through upping the age wouldn't help either.

Basically we need to change the way we handle the teenagers. Instead of showering them with "there just confused and miss understood" they should be shipped off to National Service camps and taught some respect.

Yep that's me not voting tories.
Can't remember the last time I saw a fight kicked off by students in clubs, its always aggressive guys in there 20s.
As to young kids getting the booze, I still don't think this will help, as I imagine in most cases they just take it without asking from their parents houses, I know that's what a lot of my mates used to do before we all turned 18 :/

Where is the majority to speak against the tax hike for people who smoke?

Sitting on the fence saying the same. *shrug*

Hmm way to mis-use that poem. Sticking a few extra pence in tax on alcohol really isn't in the same league as what the Nazi's did is it?
