Phone Rage

It's all a bit extreme to say the least - putting your hand up to go to the toilet? Errrrr we're all adults here !

see above, that very much still happens. You also have to put your hand up for anything else you might want. Your not allowed to leave your desk unless its your allocated break time. And when you do, your timed to the second. If you're given a 10 minute coffee break, if your not back at your desk within 10minutes and 30 seconds you get a late notice.

I used to work in a returns dept for a big manchester computer parts reseller ( better not say who ). And the attitude at the time from the boss/management sums it all up really "just get the job done and i dont care about your problems. This department doesnt make us any money, in fact you loose us money... so if you dont stop siding with the customers and issuing refunds some of you are being replaced with people who know how to do what they are told " : This came from the boss almost word for word.

The returns department to them was just an evil that had to be endured, we were understaffed and constantly harrased by the the sales staff and their super ego's about their customers being "unhappy with the service and speed it up you wasters". We usually had maybe 2 people working in the department at a time due to the pc building team manager stealing staff to help him out. We had to answer a 60/min pc "helpline" as well as the normal returns telephone ( both rang constantly ) as well as staff the returns counter ( busy constantly ) AS WELL as test and deal with RMA's that came in by post. We were supposed to get a 30min lunch break but this never happened most of the time and if the boss came down and there was a queue at the counter he would go mental ( in front of the customers ) and call us all sorts and say we were lazy.

Another fun thing we had to endure was "monday morning" when we would open the door to the dept and usually find a huge pile of pc bits filed up on the counter. This was left by the sunday staff ( the counter sales was open but the returns dept wasnt ) who had simply replaced stuff on the spot for customers and dumped the old bits on us. No rma numbers , customer details or anything. The boss would always come down first thing and go on at us to "get it tested and back into stock before 10!" Some of the stuff wasnt even ours, and sometimes it was incomplete or physically broken so worthless and should never have been taken back in the first place. Guess who got it in the neck? yup we did, not the sales staff. :(

I expect not a lot has changed in these sort of business's, the management HATE the whole returns department idea... it costs them money and they get nothing back for it ( in their eyes anyway ).

You were treated as a bonded slave and pretty much anything you said was ignored. You would be fired on the spot and rehired the next day quite often. This was the sort of place that would fire someone and then fabricate "warnings" and such to get out of any legal actions you might try to pull on them. The whole of the upper management were lying scheming scumbags who would sell their grandmothers hair if they could. The ONLY thing that meant anything to them was money, morals and decency could take a running jump.

I wouldnt mind but the business was doing great and it wasnt as if things were on a knife-edge. It was simple greed.

Am I the only one that thinks thats ****** up in this day and age?

Another old PCSC chap hey... when were you in that 21st century coal mine?

I worked there too. Was so glad to be free of the clutches of the group that owns them.

Missed the show last night sadly. I really wanted to watch it :(

Funny you should say that. I always use Sunday to take stuff back i have problems with or is slightly 'not working'; like the time when the button on my PC case didnt 'click' any more (but still worked) simply because the returns dept is closed and the sales always replace it with no questions. If i take it back on a week day id have to wait for several days to probably hear "Yes it works fine sir, have it back"

I work for one of the largest companys worldwide and they still treat people like No Swearing!. They also like to threaten you if something happens Quote "Its not wise to take us to court, people have tried and failed many times", even before you have thought about further action. Luckly we have managed to force the unions in to help us, they had to be forced since the company i work for tried to keep them out.
Basically whenever a union member is involved with an HR dispute it is quashed by the mere mention of brining a union rep in :)

10 minutes 30 seconds? Christ, at my old place, if you weren't in your seat and off your break code bang on the second you've finished the break, you often had your TL taking you to one side and giving you a telling off!

I'll probably watch this program tonight, but I expect it to be pretty accurate from what you others have said.

depends on the call centre doesnt it. we were allowed 30 seconds leeway, but if you were more than 30 seconds you got a late notice. Logged on at 9:01am in the morning ? late notice. 3 Late notices in a month and you got a disciplinary.

You only have to be late back off your break by 40 seconds twice in a month and maybe late once (due to traffic or whatever) and bang disciplinary.

One of the reasons I chose to go with O2 as my ISP was because support is UK based. I've used it a few times and have to say it's a pleasure talking to them, even if they are Irish lol.

Was this about inbound or outbound call centres? Or both? I've worked in both, and there's a huge difference in the way staff are treated (and therefore act towards customers) between them - inbound call centres are a lot more relaxed.

One of the reasons I left my inbound call centre job was that they were merging my department with telephone banking, who had sales quotas to meet! I just couldn't bring myself to start taking their calls and trying to sell new accounts or insurance to people who had called to find out their balance.

Watched this myself thought it was brilliant. I work in a call centre myslef. General public really don't have a clue. We are just here to take the flack and the big cats are to blame. That women apologizing for shouting was funny. Why didn't not shout to start with.

Did 9 months between november 2006 and July 2007. I still can't get over how badly that place was run!

Dude, which team was you on and who was your TL? When I worked there I worked on Team 17 with Rich Hobday as TL. Do you know Rich Renshaw by chance?

I can't say I recognise the name. I was on T20 with Mick Wilson.

And MrLOL, obviously it's call centre dependent, but the whole lateness thing is obviously a thing in every call centre, and it really is a ridiculous thing. It's like being back at school!

My place is the same if you get 4 files notes its time for disciplinary (sack). Mind you me and the missus have been late a few times now becuase of traffic (accidents) and tidal swells. But if we know we are going to be late we call and let them know. But when i first started I was told theres no excuse. And yes if you're 1 minute over then you're in deep doodoo. With my place though it depends what manager you have. My first one was a right hitler constantly threatening we'd lose our jobs if we didnt do certain things. Also kept making us sign these stupid made up contracts for things like trying to get home quotes on car quotes. If we didnt try on every quote it was a sackable offence. My current manager is way laid back. He hardly ever even speaks to me.

It was similar for me. My manager was fairly good with lateness (not too much of a telling off unless it was a regular thing) and generally cool with us. That said, there were some hitlers in the company which I experienced when my TL was away or unavailable. I really do think large call centres are the same nationwide, which is the sole reason for me to graduate this year with a good degree so I don't end up in such an awful industry.
